Information on launch and waypoints for Mapelane
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:57:28 AM »
Hi Guys,
I am new to UA and I can only say one thing -  :ayb I have spent hours on UA since discovering it!!!!
WELL DONE!

I wonder if anybody can help me? I am off to Mapelane in April for 10 days with the jetski but has never fished and or launched there before...  Any information on the launch etc will be greatly appreciated.  Also, as I have never fished that area before I do not have any waypoints for bait, reefs etc.

Anybody willing to share?

Thanks.

Thanks RM
I see you are based in St. lucia and most probably know the area well... How is the launch at Mapelane? I see on google earth there is a protected bay - Is it a safe assumption that you launch out of the bay?

Also, I see there is quite a steep bank, almost a meter drop, from the beach to the water / bay (internet photos), is it always like that or was that maybe after those storms we had?

Hey MM

Firstly welcome to UA you will like it here.

I have fished a couple of times at Mapelane and it is a great place.

The launch is a tricky one mainly due to the shore break and steep beach. Ski boats normally launch on rollers here to get speed into the shore break. There can also be quite a strong right to left rip that makes staying straight in the shore break rather difficult. In my experience it is all about timing - punch through the shorebreak then run parallel to the beach (running left) to avoid some reef that forms the protection for the bay. Then it's a fairly clear run in between the reef out to backline.

I agree with Rory on this. Some great spots to fish here especially for couta, snoek and kingies.
