Kambaku almost had a Grand Slam 2 days ago...

They released a huge blue (2 h fight on 80 Lb), a stripie and a saily. Lost 2 black marlins!!!!

Still not a bad day to spend a Wednesday!

We blanked gloriously!

Cobalt blue water, 29-30o C and absolutely oil flat all day! Actually I think the conditions were too perfect!

Tried to make bait early in the morning. Passed through a shoal next to B24 and had a toothy thing rip the small red/black kona... After an hour we headed to the deep blue and stayed there... I mean 300-500 m! Had a HUGE leatherback next to the boat... Beautiful sight....

Swam all big names: Pulsator, Illand, Mold, BigT, 3 teasers...

On our way back, much shallower (~50 m) had a major strike on the shotgun... was pulling my secret weapon (a 2 kg chocka on a 20/0 circle).... line was taken on free spool, gave it a count to 20 and slowly increased the drag... unfortunately no hook up! Chocka came back broken half way...

Chakra was out there as well (peterblace took a ride) and lost a marlin... not sure if they had any further action...

Nevertheless it was a great day out there. Crew was only myself and brother so not sure what would have happened if we'd hooked into a big mama...

Just got word from PB they dropped 2 yesterday. First one they dropped after hooking up while still setting up the spread early on but line got tangle around the rod tip and line broke and the second at the end of the day after fighting the fish for 10mins it spat the hooks  :-(

Guess that's  :billf: fishings

yah...I guess that's fishing...you don't win always
it was a awesome outing and I loved being aboard Chakra
we launched Saturday at 9:00 from Santa Maria where I was spending the long weekend (it was a public holiday yesterday)
flat seas and nearly no wind...according to the internet it was the day
we took the kids out and in total we were 6 adults (4 fisherman and 2 tourists) and 3 kids
plan was to head out to the 400mts and eventualy if we spoted some bird activity we would set some rappies or feathers out for the kids

after getting to the area and while setting the lines out...Marcelo was still holding the rod while setting up the outriger when something strange happened...
Marcelo felt a lot of pressure on the rod and outriger trigered...again setting up the outriger and vazzzz...marlin came in again and line took
the moment Marcelo tried to hook up line snaped...argh...fish start jumping and going away...it was probably trying to spit the bling from the bill
2min into the game and we were already in with a marlin...that was a promissing day we thought
when I was setting up that rod again I noticed that while doing the double line, every time I was pulling line out of the rod line tend to twist and grab the rod tip...a huge amount of line was twisted and we think that's the reason line have snaped
we thought for a moment there was a line slack (maybe when outriger was trigered) and line twisted on the rod tip...and when Marcelo tryed to hook up the fish lin snaped

but day slowed down and we had to keep the kids busy so every now and then we would put 1 feather out while getting to bird activity...and we have had 3 strikes on the feather
1 landed bonito, 1 nearly landed fish...it was under the boat when hook come off...and 1 missed hooked up fish

when we were ready to call it a day another strike...again on the right short riger
reel was smoking and marlin started jumping...I set up the stand up harness (figthing chair harness stayed in Maputo) and set on the chair...grabbed the rod and start fighting the fish
but after 10min hook came off while fish was taking line
I have to say that was not the most confortable position to fight the fish...it was a first time for me and for the 10min of happiness I had I wish I was sitting on my central bum box holding the rod on the harness
legs spread open like a labour work matress, elbow knocking on the arm chair and murphy's law...straight butt rod...
next time I will have to test it and tune all before hand so that all goes right

I was invited to be part of 4play team for 2014 and that's a big challenge for me...on a comp there will be a lot of pressure on my shoulders
there will be no resting time...it will be pump pump pump and no resting time for the fish
I was recommended to start doing some puch ups and getting fit...there will be no resting time on a comp day
it's not fishing as I'm used aboard Maguro...that's big fishing...targeting Marlin only
eisha...I'm scared!!!

launched yesterday with JohfF aboard maguro
plan was to head North for some cuta fishing and after cuta time we would head out to the deep for some spinning (whenever we have tuna activity), jigging at the Radio Active area and out to try for some saily and some dorado

late(r) launch as my deckie fell asleep...boat was in the water at 6:20 and we headed for BxRibeiro to collect some livies...and in 20min we were packed with good size ones

by 8:20 we were in the cuta area but nearly no activity...no showings on the sonar and no surface activitity
we had 4 lines out...2 at the surface and 2 deeper
after nearly 1h we had our first strike...but our livie was eaten and the bling was spit off
we setup again and worked the area one more time...and we were on...
JohnF grabbed the rod and fought the fish...after 5m a 8kg cuta was landed

we setup again and kept working the area untill 10:15...and because all was slow we decided to bring all up and start heading out
we setup 1 kit with a heavy bullet and we trolled at 16knts nearly all the way to Poço...nada

at Poço, were we normally see plenty surface activity and nice showings...this time we saw very little to nada
we decided to give it a try on jigging...and on the first drop I was on...for 10''...fish didn't like my squid jig
then shoalls were moving...so the little we saw on the sonar soon disapear
we stayed in the area for nearly 1/2h and decided to head out to Liberty area...and to B24...by 14:30 and with nearly no action we called the day off
already in the bay we spotted the usal 3M bonnies...and we gave it a try on the spinning kit
first I only had 1 strike and none comminting...then JohnF's turn...on the fisrt cast he had 1 strike...on the 2nd cast he was on and afer 3m we landed and released a ~5kg bonnie
it was full of action with halfbeaks, flying fish, small bait jumping all over

it was a good day at sea in good company...loads of chatting and good fun
at the end of the day we spoke to the spearos about their outing
we all concluded that we are in winter fishing with summer weather
nice and flat seas...28º water temp, 31º outside temp and nearly no wind (with the usual East blowing in the afternoon giving us a bumpy ride)

Nakisai launched and landed a 500lb marlin...died after 3h fight
Mon Ami found a lost fishing net and caught some tuna and dorado around it
spearos...some caught little fish...some caught some nice fish...1 doggy killed and 1 missed...2 nice size cuta, some barracuda and some small rat cuta

yesterday maguro also gave me some headaches:
1) battery flat...I had to jump start one of the engines
2) live bait well has the water flow to the deck...so fishing hatches were filled with water in a few seconds...I have to redo something on the live bait well...that's a problem cause for some how I have water going to the hull
3) VHF radio has a malfunction on the communication button
4) port engine control when accelerating locks the red button (the one you click when in neutral to engage the throttle)...I have to press the red button again to reduce the speed

solutions:
1) although battery stayed overnight on the carger I will not risk and I will buy a new one during the week...
2) I will do some tests to try and find out how the water is going to the hull...I think there's some leaking from the fish hatch...it's only on the starboard side of the boat and I've seen some water coming from that side of the hull
3) I will try and fix it here in Maputo...otherwise I'm buying a new one...prices on fixed VHF units?
4) do you guys have any thought about the reason that can happen?

ah...finaly I found a solution for what I've exposed here http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=13267.msg208391#msg208391
I found someone in CPT that has the pistons I'm looking for
pricing is good and I will go for it...in 2 weeks I'm collecting the stuff in hands in CPT

Glad to hear you guys had a nice day out. In terms of the leak perhaps check for any small cracks etc in the fish hatch especially around the outlet pipe. Perhaps water is getting in through a small crack?

yesterday took place first leg of Maritimo comp for 2014
as mentioned before I was invited to take part of Fourplay team...I hope maguro doesn't get jealous of me "abandoning" her but with the way comps are ruled there's no point for me to attend them...I'm fishing for game and most important...for fun...everyone else's fishing for billfish

due to forecast comp was postponed for Sunday (from Saturday) but very rough seas were expected...wind has been blowing since Thursday with big increase during Saturday
no less then 10knt expected for Sunday with some 16knt gusts during the day

we had a late launch at 6:15 and headed to Jeremias area...but getting to the Baixos da Inhaca we were confronted with big swells...huge walls hiting the 31'' cuddy...not much maneuver so it tooks quite a while to get over it...and we had to detour to calmer areas
so we set the lines by 7:40 out of Bx Danae...headed to Jeremias and to the deep where all the fleet was fishing
around 10:00 we had a marlin hitting the illand express and triggering the outrigger...long run and just when I was setup on the chair and starting to fight the fish...off
1st lesson learned...hook up...pump a few times to hook up properly the fish...I was too excited and just grabbed the rod and setup the harness and tottaly forgot to set the hoop properly
my fault...but also skippers fault...he could have accelerated a bit to do the job for me)...and also deckie's fault...he should have set up the hook for me before I set on the chair
after some talking last night it was a lesson learned from the 3...don't trust anyone and do what's needed...even if we will do it 3 times...the more the better

not much activity seen the all day...no bait...no birds nada...and kept working the area and listening to all the missed strikes and releases from the rest of the fleet

by 14:20 same lure...same position...strike and nada...but we did the drop-back...and vazzzz...we were on
from 1st lesson learned...I pumped quite a few times to set up the hook properly...Marcelo did the same...and Ze Maria pumped up the accelerator...so we all didn't forget what we chatted before
after a short fight and indecive of what I was fighting...big wahoo...big dorado (no showings)...small marlin (no showings)...I said...we have a saily...everyone was still indecive and I said...we have a saily...get the release card ready and setup for a release...we are on on the comp (well...at the moment we were 6 on the release list but still some time for fishing remaining)

when we got the fish to the boat we noticed that the hook was properly set in the middle of the bill...and he already had a wound (aprox3cm) around the hookup point...the moment we did the release procedure for the comp and when we were trying to take the hook out he gave some head shackes that made the bill to brake in 1/2
shame and sad but we had to remove the hook from it which we did it and released it for another fight
we estimate to be a ~25kg fish...very small fish that didn't gave us a show
some more lessons learned from me
2nd lesson learned...even if you sitting on the fighting chair you always follow the basics of fishing...pump...reel...pump...reel...somehow there was too many moments when I was just reeling in without pumping causing me more fatigue
3rd lesson learned...due to the above mentioned I got tired very fast (maybe I'm not fit enough)...I found myself trying to reel in with my left hand...and with both hands...not much success though

by 15:45 we cleared the lines and went back to the club
in the end 5 marlin and 1 saily (ours) were released...and very little game fish was caught
Yoland won with a marlin and nice size couta and wahoo

I wouldn't do it on maguro/maximvs...we did get a big hiding from neptune...but I don't feel that sore
camlmer seas give me bigger body sore aboard maguro/maximvs

but I have to say that we all felt a bit sick...2 of us tottaly KO the all trip
