Cracked gearbox housing on 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke motor
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:51:14 AM »
On Sunday we went fishing and beached at Durban ski boat club at around 1.30pm.

Whilst standing and waiting for the tractor to bring the trailer, this old toppie comes in alongside my ski boat with his hell cat (catamaran sail boat) and procedes to push the boat back out and then accross the transom of my boat.

Well it does not take a rocket scientist to know that the waves are going to push the boat in towards shore. His sail boat crashes into my motors. My skegs hole his boat and start ripping his boat with every wave surge.

With me swearing like a trooper at him and him constantly apologizing we eventually get his boat off my motors and onto shore.

When i checked the motors i could not see any damage so did not take his contact details.

However when i got home and proceded to clean the boat, i realised that there was a small crack directly behind the prop on the gearbox housing. I've monitored it and its not leaking gearbox oil, but i'm fuming now.

Does anyone have spare yamaha gearbox housings for sale, i seriously dont want to take it in and get welded. I'd prefer another part.

Hi Michael some people are absolute plonkers. Try accesory spares center  off riverhorse off ramp. Their pricing on spares is reasonable. Sorry only advice I can give.

I've spoken to Alpha at Durban Yamaha, who says he can aluminium weld it. But i maintain its integrity has been compromised, so would rather put a secondhand part on or last resort new part. I will be pricing parts with anthony at Jenta marine as well.

hi guys...not wanting to hijack the post and because we are all looking at spares for 1 specific engine I would like to request for your help...for my 60hp yamaha from 2001

maguro's previous owner cut (saw) the tilt piston on engines to make it easy for beaching

please find attached a picture of maguro's piston...compared to lhooker's (not canibalized) piston

in case it needed here is the data from my engines
60FETO 6H2 L(I guess L for Long shaft) with s/n 475328 S
60FETO 6H2 L(I guess L for Long shaft) with s/n 474653 S

can you please also check with Yamaha or any other OEM/parts dealer what the price is for the missing pistons (+ all the needed spares to replace it) for the tilt on my trim/tilt system?

also attached is the page from yamaha parts catalogue

(pics will follow)

A lot of sellers say that, but if you contact them directly they're generally willing to ship to SA. If you don't have an eBay account and want me to try help out just let me know. Only problem is that it'll take 3-4 weeks to arrive...

Ok, this weekend was a total eye opener for me. I took the boat to Durban yamaha and saw alpha then took it for a second opinion to Colin roper at Fynnlands ski boat club. Both said exactly the same thing.

Now this is a warning for all you guys with older motors like mine.

What happens when you take your prop off, when you look inside there is a lock nut behind the prop. This lock nut over years apparently keeps on tightening and tightening to the extent that it actually cracks the motors where mine cracked (behind the prop)

The solution i was told is that on older motors to have this lock nut removed and replaced after every say 5 years or so.

Fortunately for me as well, i was told that the gear box its self is much further away from the prop area and that simply prattleys steel fix would do the trick, which is what i've done.

It will work 100% just make sure you file/key the area well. I have done a bad crack on a boat gearbox in Mozambique that is still good years later, also a few bikes in the bush.

Domz i dont have those motors anymore, i sold the boat a while back.

I took my boat in to Catski in pennington, Mark edmond aluminium welded the crack for me and then resprayed the gearbox housing.

When the job was done it looked like a new gearbox housing.

It cost in the region of about R3000

You can contact Mark edmond at 0788288354

Cheers, i hope you come right
