MynManne fishing comp for UA Members
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:41:36 AM »
Hi Guys
Some feedback on entries for the Myn Manne fishing comp February at Sodwana. 52 Boats entered, 4 jetskis, and 14 Strandloper teams. Entries close for boats at 80 boats so there is still space if you want to do a late entry. Check www.myn-manne.co.za for more info. Team Liberty is entered and we are there to win. :win: :win: :happ: :happ: :happ:
See you guys who have also entered?

A humble suggestion.

There has been much talk about a break-away weekend by some forum members - soon, for a long weekend's fishing, as I am sure some are just burning to get a line into the water.

February for instance is just around the corner, and with the MYN MANNE competition then over that time there is a very good chance of still connecting some very decent pelagics in the R&S category at Sodwana (remember end summer last year's good catches by John Adelaine and his clients).

I humbly suggest and put it to the forum that we nominate or elect based on merit, skill, and proven ability and record a team of say four R&S anglers to enter the "Strandloper" division of the competition. We have some formidable R&S anglers in our midst who I am sure can perform very well in such a competition and do Ultimate Angling proud in the process. Being present and representing our esteemed forum will be good publicity and properly establish us amongst the national fishing fraternity.

I suggest, and put it to members and the forum management that we can all collectively canvass sponsorship for finances and material support for such an elected/appointed team.

My consideration would just be that it must truly be the best possible team that we can muster.

Apart from sponsorship by the forum (and some of our supporting businesses) there may be some of us (like me) who will be prepared to accompany (at own cost) as a support team, making it also a fun outting and experience.

This suggested to forum members and management to consider, but as there is not much time left and am sure entries will soon close, suggest we consider as a matter of urgency so that if favourably considered by members we can discuss, consider and conclude as a matter of reasonable urgency.

Howzat Tony & Homie, another task and consideration for the Chairman and Secretary General.

Have some individuals in mind that I would recommend, - depending their availability over that time of course.

Thanks for the headsup BigVan...
and for the suggestions Toppie! Sounds like a great idea! I won't be able to make that weekend as I am meeting my boet and family from Aus in Rocktail.
My feelings on the matter of competition... don't reckon it's that important to have the "best" anglers going down... fishing is (above all) fun after all, and anyone who can make it and represent UA is great? All our best anglers will be fishing the Development Nationals in the first week of March, so I doubt whether any of them can afford to do 2 trips so close together... so anyone who is willing to represent UA, I say go for it!? Anyone?

@Toppie would you mind posting which individuals you had in mind. I'm just interested to see which members are percieved to be the "best" anglers. Don't worry I won't take TOO much offense if my name slips your mind when you compile this list ;)

Well, Must-Byte...now you have really put me on the spot.

Having personally fished with only a few of you guys, I dont profess to know the capabilties of all, but considering it is a competition in which variety species counts the most and sharks are not considered, I would suggest for instance that a specialist shark/flattie angler will be less suitable than an all-round angler capable of targeting the R&S species prevalent at Sodwana at that time of the year. (PS: Sodwana R&S fishing is very unfairly under-rated, just ask Ray de Bruin & Co).

I think there are many on the forum that know each and the other's capabilities much better than I do, that is why I would suggest a democratic system of nomination for which we can vote for the four most recommended for instance which are then officially chosen/appointed to represent UA. That of course if we can gather and muster sponsorship to subsidise them to represent UA..

I have noticed that you are a reasonably capable fisherman yourself, so perhaps I might nominate you also, but having had the pleasure to attend the UA social at Vidal, I think that I would nominate Doc and Tony for instance if they were available.

That does not detract from others who I also hold in high regard, and some others that I may nominate. A cursory evaluation of the fishing reports, posts and pics will quite easily show up the most successful and experienced among us. Perhaps through nomination to draw up a shortlist, ask who is available, and then have everybody vote to select 4 candidates. I think such a process should be representative and reasonably fair.

Just a thought and I am sure there are many who can contribute their ideas about how to make such a nomination process transparent and fair.

Dont be sceptical now, you might just find yourself one of those nominated and chosen, and please dont worry, I have no visions or ideals to include myself, I dont fish in that "league" - I fish for pleasure, to spend quality time with family and friends, to make new friends, and to revitalise my old bones. spirit, and my soul!

Lol sorry Toppie Im not trying to put you on the spot its just that I have noticed that a forum environment can create a perception of how good an angler is which can have no relation to how they actually perform at the water. I think I am a prime example of this I probably come across as knowledgable however, I know that in fact I really know very little about fishing and spend more time unpicking overwinds than I do fighting fish. Another example from the opposite side of the scale is Mike Pike Ill be honest when I first saw Mike's posts I didnt think he was a bad angler but he also didnt strike me as anything more than a really friendly guy who enjoyed throwing a line occassionally. That all changed when I had the privilege and I do mean it was a privilege to fish with the founders of UA at hole in the wall. Mike blew me away with the way he just keeps fishing changing tactics making baits trying new spots it was amazing! Yet from the forum I had never realised how good he was. I guess my point is that for many people its easy to look like a good angler on a forum but not next to the water.

Thats exactly my point Must-Byte, I would find it difficult for instance not to nominate any of the fine guys I met at Vidal.

They are streets ahead of me in knowledge, experience, and results (also gadgets mind you!). I am sure that any of them and many other also would do our forum very proud if given the opportunity to represent us.

PS: I had better get of those power bands, one on each wrist, each ankle, and a LED LENSER if I wish to stand a chance.

Talking about Led Lenser Headlamps, believe the new model "14" which is even brighter with one more battery is now available in selected stores.
