Queenie madness off Abu Dhabi

Greetings from the desert.........

Myself and two Kiwi mates went on a charter with a local a couple of weeks ago to see if we can get into the couta action that was happening all week long just off the Abu Dhabi coast. We had an early start to the morning and was on the look out for some bird action and the tell-tale jumping couta in the gulf.

After about an hour of fruitless searching we decided to head towards the main shipping channel as there was some reports of some Queenie action during the week,heading towards the channel we could see some boats in the distance and the birds in a frenzy,and we knew we found the Queenies. From teh first throw it was apparent that the fish was their in great numbers and was hungry at the same time.

We were catching them on everything we had brought with,including dropshot,small metal spoons,needle nose plugs and small poppers,it was all out action!! At one stage I was hooking up and giving the rod to the Arab skipper  much to his delight,after 3 hours we had caught 45 queenies all in the 6-9kg range and returned all but 2 that was badly hooked.

What tackle are you using on the Queen's?

I used 8ft spinning rods with 10lbs Fireline and Stradic 4000 reel...

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun now that the heat is gone... 

Have you fished on the east coast?

Always had a lot of dorries in between the queens and cuta's...

Ja we also use 7-8 ft spinning rods and Shimano reels in the 4000 range,ja we are glad that the heat is gone for a couple of months,because as you know its impossible to do anything outdoors in the summer. Regarding the East coast do you mean in the Fujeira area or the Ras Al Kheima stretch.

I am talking about the tankers around Fujeira...

I have done a mid June trip in 2008 to Fujeira.

When we left 03:00 Dubai was still 36º C...

That morning the water temp 8 miles off shore was 32ºC

Lots of small tuna around then... But we could only stay out till 11:00... The heat was BRUTAL 

Have you been down to that spot in OMAN where the monster shad comes out in October November?

Its about 1200km from Dubai...

The fishing is about all I miss about the SAND PIT

We have got a trip planned for the 24th of Feb to a place called Shuwaymiyah in southern oman,you must check it out on you tube,the fishing is realy amazing there,but its my first time,I think the palce you are talking about is called Ras Madrakha.

AJ went there with Nick to explore a couple of years ago...

He caught a very nice milk fish on fly and had a lot of fun with different species...

Have you guys discovered anywhere in Abu Dhabi that's easliy accessible for drop shot fishing from the shore?  I also have a kayak, but launch sites seem to be few and far between.  Any help or advise would be appreciated.  Cheers, Bobby

hey Bobby,we use to have a nice spot behind marina maal but its a construction site now and out of bounds,since we got the kayaks about a year ago,we fished less from the shore,we fish alot under the Sadiyat bridge and in the channel. But as you know summer is here again and we are forced to be indoors,sux!!

Hi Vismal,

Thanks for the note.  I'm probably going to launch at the Saadiyat bridge on Saturday morning.  Is it worith getting into the lagoon on the northern side of Saadiyat?  If so, what sort of fish can I expect to find?  Are there small queenies, or traveli along the edge of the deep channel?  I'm using light drop shot tackle and thought 4 inch sand worms would work well, thought?

Hi Bobby,sorry for the late reply,I'm on holiday at home,on the Nothern side you can concentrate around the channel markers and the big electrical blocks,all sorts of trevelly and queenies.
