Braid casting leaders
« on: March 01, 2026, 09:03:24 AM »
Hi! I want to start using a braid casting leader and would like to know where things stand wrt knots, lenghts etc? I have a setup that I will be using in Costa Rica and Gabon this year. I currently have PE5 line on a 14K twinpower with 12ft Assassin affinity XXH . Would a PE4 mainline to PE6 leader be a good combo, or should I step up the leader, or drop the mainline? Is the FG still the standard? I am concerned that nothing is anchoring the braid casting leader. Could I use a Rizzuto finish on the braid casting leader to lock it in?

Hi,usually the casting leader is atleast dbl the breaking strain/thickness of your mainline mainly just for abrasion resistence from using the bionic finger when surf casting,I've got 30LB mainline and 80LB braid leader about 2 or 3 wraps around the spool, tied on using an FG knot
Always be humble...

Thank you! I have been trying out casting leaders the last few weeks and have become a convert. I use an FG knot with rizutto finish and then another rizutto finish with the leader braid above the main braid FG. Probably overkill but no issues so far.
