Penn Slammer 111 8500

Dear Anglers, Please can someone assist , I serviced my Penn Slammer111 8500, I replaced the pinion gear, main drive gear, oscillation slider, O/S gear, and all the bearing. After I assembled the reel and screwed the side place. The reel feels tight, it's smooth, but not spinning free, like if you turn the handle and leave it the doest not spin. Some advice please.

How many shims (thin washers) did you install on the main gear?
How much and what type of grease did you use?
Take the LH side plate off, take a photo and post / attach to reply

Dear Fishatic, the Penn Slammer 8500, does not take shims washer. Will take a pick and post it, it was three small screws holding down the bearing on the left plate.

It's a smaller Slammer, but should be practically identical to yours. Make sure you have assembled correctly?

What's the best grease to use?

It uses shims.
8A in the attached screen grab of the schematic; really just a very thin washer that helps set how close the gear teeth run to each other.
Too many shims will make it feel very stiff, but also grindy. I suspect its too MUCH heavy grease.

Dear, Fishatic, the shim no 8A, I ordered two , they are smaller,  and they are  for the Slammer 5500/6500 8A-SSV5500 Drive Gear Shim Washer. Greatly appreciate your assistance, I am also very puzzled , tell me what grease should I try. I used the Kingfisher and Okoma grease.

Both are perfectly good. just wondering if you perhaps used a LOT of grease? Can make winding feel a very sluggish.

All spares was obtained from Iron River, bearing at R194.25 each

Dear Friends, thanks for all your advice and input. you will not believe that, the took out the new pinion, main and oscillation gears and put on the old gears and reels is spinning perfect. I thinks the new gears are not messing well.

I got quoted R291.38 per bearing by the same people in May 2022 (Part number 127152)
So I do not understand how the same bearing can now be R100 cheaper.
(But it will still cost you close to R800 to replace the 4 bearings)


Anyway, some you win some you lose, but as a comparison, you can still replace all the bearings in a Gosa for sum total of ħR200.

Hi Bamboes-Vis, the problem with the Penn bearings is that its not available in any bearing shop, because of the spec. Only Penn stock them.
