Spinning for Yellowtail near Coffee Bay, Transkei
« on: October 06, 2021, 07:31:19 PM »
Hi guys. I will be spending a couple days at Coffee Bay during December. I will be up early every morning to get some spinning done before the day gets started.

I am keen to try my luck for a yellowtail and I have a few questions:
1. Is it possible to catch yellowtail in that area?
2. I am conservation minded and would never keep a kob or garrick. Whats the view on yellowtail? Wouldn't mind feeding my friends if I get lucky.
3. My standard set up for garrick & snoek is an 11ft Loomis 1-3Oz, stradic 5000 with 21lb braid. I also have a bg4000 with 30lb braid, or bg4500 with 40lb braid. What reel would best ?

Ill have a lighter set up that ill use, but want a heavier set up ready incase I see.some action.
Any advice will be appreciated :happ:

There are definitely yellowtail in the area. I have seen 2 or 3 come out at Hole in the wall (from the queen), but they were taken on bait. They are the exception, and not a regular occurrence. They give you a serious run for your money, and you will need some heavier tackle to get them out, because of all of the rocks. Knowing how to do the Transkei waltz (jumping from rock to rock, as the fish takes you back and forth) is a pre-requisite - a bit difficult as you get older. I am a eater of fish, and if I got one, I would certainly enjoy eating it.
Good luck, and hope you catch one

Yellow tail are around in Dec, its actually a very good time for them, BUT CB is not a known hotspot for them. Mbolompo is the go to spot, or Brazen head. Both a little way away from Coffee Bay. Mapuzi Pt may hold 1 or 2, as will Black Rock, Hlunguwana and The Queen but Mboloimpo is def where you want to be.
You are probably under gunned for the tail there, they are quite big on the whole, 8-20kg size, not too many of the little guys. Unfortunately Mbolompo is being over run by the drone brigrade, and not a place to fish alone, especially if you are new to the area.
Spinning wize, thuough, weather dependent, fishing Umatata mouth you could get kob, leerie and Kingies, YT, Big eye and GT. These will also be around most of the beaches, and points.
I havnt fished CB itself, other than from the sea, but the points within a short walk/ drive of CB worth a shot. Gert a decent gillie though, often the rentasl house/ hotel/ back packers can assit, as you also need a car guard when fishing the remote spots. Unfortunately its a poor area, and too many will take a chance.

I will aslo be there over dec, but  :billf: are the target.
