Blank Recommendation for 12' Surf Rod
« on: June 20, 2021, 01:34:25 AM »
I am looking for recommendations for a 12' to 12'6" surf rod (spinning) that will excel at casting 2 oz. to 3 oz. aerodynamic lures for maximum distance.  Primary targets are Roosters and Jacks, etc.  Caveat: no section of the blank can exceed 79"  in length to fit airline travel tube length restrictions.  This basically means it need to be close to a 50/50 split for two pieces. I am aware of the Century Sling Shot.  What else is out there that has a 50/50 split at 12'?  Yes I know I can look myself, and I have.  I am not seeing much that is 50/50, and several brand sites don't specify the section length so I am just wondering if any sponsors or others may already have this info. Thanks in advance.

Look for a  12' - 13' 3lb to 4lb test curve carp blank or rod.
ALL will be 50/50 split.
3.5lb probably best. Have a look at Bigcarptackle.com.

I saw on the other site that a Surf Machine Elite was suggested. I'd love one. Especially the 12' 3/4-5oz
All the SME's appear to be 50/50 splits so air travel will be fine.
Inasmuch advancedfishing-usa is down, centuryrods.com is working... most of the SME info is there.

Thanks ZA.  I see that American Tackle has a line of blanks under Atrex name that they refer to as carp rod blanks.  They list the following two blanks:  12'6" 3.5TC 1-4 oz lure Fast Action X Heavy power;  and a 12' 3.5TC 1-4 oz lure fast action heavy power.  When I think of carp rods I assume they are designed for bait and weight, not to excel at throwing lures.  The heavy and extra heavy power ratings are throwing me off a little as most other lure blanks I see out there re more medium power.  Are you familiar with these blanks?

The Amtak blanks are new to me, very interested though.

The assumpton aboiut weight and bait only is way off, carp blanks make superb lure rods:

CTS Vapour Trail: carp

Century Stealth carp and then additional models developed from there.

Century Slingshot carp and then developed

Century C2D carp

Century FMA carp

The SM and SME whilst surf specific were based on Century's carp blank know how.

12' vs 12'6... both will work well, but the 12'6 sounds goodly.

Thank you again sir.  You are so very helpful always.  Just so I am clear ZA, you would choose the XH 12'6" over the 12' H for 2-3 oz lures?

Yes Mexico.  Roosters and Jacks, etc., from shore.  Looking for a blank that will excel at throwing 2-3 oz aerodynamic lures (rangers, gt ice creams, line stretcher surface tension, etc).  Key lure range for this rod is 2-3 oz.  I have other rods for above and below that range.

ZA, just curious.  Assuming 2-3 oz lures and a properly matched rod, what is the maximum and average casting range skilled and average casters can expect.  Not saying I am a skilled caster by any means - no doubt closer to average.  I am just wondering what to expect and what the realistic goal should be.  My current setup is 20lb braid to a 50lb braid leader to a mono or flouro leader.  Only the braid to braid FG knot goes through the guides (Thanks for your advice on this setup also).

Hmmm.I'll do yards
2oz metal on a 12'6 I'd expect flick to 100yd, easy cast 130yd, more effort to 140yd and top out at 150yd.
3oz metal on a 12'6 I'd expect flick to 115yd, easy cast 140yd, more effort to 150yd and top out at 160yd.
