Loomis Archipelago STX - Jigging vs Spinning
« on: July 08, 2020, 01:32:22 PM »
Hello - I have the original Loomis Archipelago 10ft and I think it's the berries.  I see they now have a 10ft STX Jigging version and wondered how it differs from the Spinning version?
LOOMIS HMG ARCHIPELAGO STX SPIN SHORE JIG 10ft
LOOMIS HMG ARCHIPELAGO SPIN STX 10ft

If you have first hand knowledge please lets here from you.

Fanboys welcome (yes agreed, its a great rod)! :win:

simply put higher quality carbon fibre with superior resin system
much less resin and less fibre used for same strength.

This is the explanation from Brandon (Fishatic). He replied to a similar post.

Hi there. I was wondering the same thing as soupcan. Is the only difference that one is 10ft and the other 11ft?

Nishon, the explanation you mentioned seems to be comparing the older model HMG and the new STX versions but I'm wondering, and I think soupcan has the same question, what the difference between the 2 new models listed here on Basil Manning are.

Same range.
There are now 2 10' rods a lighter 1/2 - 1 1/2oz version has been added.
The one shown as "Shore Jig" on BM's site is the 10' 3/4-2 1/2oz.

Hi Brandon

Would you say the 10ft 3/4 to 2.5 oz is stronger than the 1/2 to 1.5oz (pulling power)? I am also looking at getting 10 ft for throwing plastics/bucktail and spoons.

I have the old 11ft (model before the STX) and I am very happy with it.

Thanks

Sting Ray

Right - thank you.  I did look for explanations but found nothing.

So the new 10ft STX version of the original is called the "Shore Jig" and is rated  3⁄4 - 2½oz which is the same casting weight range as the original.
And then a totally new 10ft STX lighter casting weight range now called the "Spin" and is rated ½ - 1½oz.

I'm very happy with the current casting weight range of the original 10ft and find the tip responsive on 30-40g tin spoons and stiff enough to cast 70g plastics.  I've also (very carefully) been flipping 1.5kg elf up the cliff with it and praying that it goes well.  About 30 fish later its proven to have plenty backbone for this - but I do use momentum and caution here.  Most fish about 1kg though.
 :shd:

Comparing the action and stiffness of the 10ft - how would you compare the original and STX?  Just in case I ever need to replace my original...

If I were you I would stick with the 3/4 to 2.5 oz, it seems to be working for you.  :shd:

2.5oz rod is stronger than the 1.5oz rod.
Would be a nice lighter rod to be used alongside the 11' you have.
