Hi,
Was up earlier this month.
Water is still low but everything in the area is green and lush and water is relatively clear, not like a 1 year or 2 years ago when the place was dry and water coffee. Fishing was good and fish very active.
Don't try launching without a 4WD

I am not "jacking" the post, but what were the results for 2018 Tiger compo ?
Will be interesting to know after all the drought, low water levels etc.

Would also like to know, a mate fished before and after and got lots of fish, the fish are still as always there but the river section(best part of the whole dam) is sadly no more......so less of those 5kg slabs you could target there

just booked for the 28th Nov - 2nd Dec,

really looking forward to it, Richard is bringing the Yeld up from Durban which as a 19ft cc is a great boat to fish off

.

I have sorted out all my lures and traces already. not much else to do during winter, so now getting the rods n reels ready

Dodger that CC will be a awesome platform to fish from, lots of space to spin and it is a little more hippo proof

oh she is, I have used her there a few times, but his time Richard will be at the wheel so I should be able do do a bit more fishing myself

some years ago we were on the Eastern shore by the Swazi border in my old Dorado Sprint, not much happening so headed back down the dam taps open and suddenly a huge bump, the motors came out of the water, looking back there was a hippo looking at me I didn't go back and appologise

Enjoy! My brother was down there this past weekend and really enjoyed it. Caught some nice tigers (no pics) according to him (a non-regular fisherman).

I have beem waiting for my Gransons pics so gottem and report follows
My Prado was packed and my fishing buddy Tony arrived a 07h30, packed his stuff and off we set. N17 passed Nigel, Bethal (what a lousy bit of road that is, plenty of stop streets with little if any road markings left and lots of big trucks)
We stopped at a place I call Macbeth for breakfast in the wimpy (Actors will not generally say Macbeth as they consider it to be unlucky, but refer to it as ‘That Scottish play’ The Town I call Macbeth has seen me lose a trailer wheel, break the trailer suspension thus I call it Macbeth.)
Then onwards to Piet Retief and Pongola. Lots of big trucks and some road works,but we got to Pongola at 13h00. The Prado running at 11,9 L/100
The last garage on the left as you leave has an adjacent bottle store where we stocked up. The butchers where we always bought biltong has now closed, apparently there isn’t an independent butcher in Pongola so Spar & Checkers only?
Richard left home with the boat and my Grandson Colby round about the same time and we all met at the Sodwana Angling club chalets around 14h30, unpacked and set the boat up for the morning.
The accommodation we had a fully equipped 3 bedroom chalet which was very comfortable. The campsite shop supplies basics non perishables cold drinks ice, firewood sardines, chicken livers, chicken hearts and some tackle hooks line wire lures line
A point of interest from Richards bay side the nearest petrol station is at Mkuze
Thursday morning saw us on the water the dam is low around 42% full and there are lodsa Hippos around so you have to be very careful. The slipway is some 50m out of the water, to the left of the slipway there are some moored jetties from which one can get livies but also an adjacent pod of hippos.
We launched and headed across the dam into what remains of the estuary based upon info from a buddy who fished there a week before. We fished with copper spoons and had a few hits but nothing was sticking. We anchored in 3,5m of water on the Eastern side carried on spinning but also had a couple of baits out, sardine & chicken hearts, the baits were attacked but my guess was they were peckers, finally hooked some on the chicken hearts fish of around 1kg were coming out.
The fish were on the small side, but my grandson got his first Tigger on board, followed by a small barble. The wind was also a problem and as the day wore in it was pumping but it also swung around so made fishing difficult
A hippo came very close to us so we upped the pick and moved.
Friday morning the dam was like a mill pond so we launched and headed out to the main dam. I have indicated an area with a Reef & trees. The reef looks to be old concrete railway sleepers and does stick out of the water a little. When we were there one boat was marking the reef with red float bottles for a weekend compo they were expecting.
We anchored and threw spoons & jigs but nothing, lots of bites on the bait but again peckers caught on chicken hearts to 1,5kg and a 3kg barble. Very hot 35 deg. We moved back into the estuary and our spot of yesterday was taken over by the hippos so we tried the Western shore 5-6m deep and lots of bites but only small fish.
Chatting to one of the local guides, he commented that with the inflow being how it is the larger females have had lockjaw for a while as they can't spawn where they want to

game viewing was amazing, we saw not in any particular order

One of the issues fishing with bait is that more often than not every bite ends up with the wire trace, partiularly piano wire looking like a spring, so I guess it goes through the

's mouth hence my reluctance to not use mono.

On a trip last year using a wire trace we got hook ups but then a bite off, I guess another fish thinks the hooked fish is chasing the swivel so it has a go at itl so small swivels are the order of the day, but even with those we had bite offs
