Kosi bay in july
« on: May 25, 2017, 02:19:05 PM »
Hi there gents!
Just wanted to find out if anyone knows how kosi fishes in july. Its the only time i have to go to the coast this year and ive just booked my campsite at Utshwayelo.
I really want to get stuck into some nice kingies on the dropsot and throw some plugs and spoons. Will also be taking the rock amd surf tackle and sliding some baits in the dark.
Any help is much appreciated!
Shot!

Hi Calvin,

July is not the best time of the year for Kosi, that being said, I was in Ponta Malongane last year towards the end of June and one morning there were Greenspot kingies chasing baitfish in the bay - just after 8am!

So the fish are there, time your tides and fish with a pushing tide, who knows, you might just get lucky and get some kingies at the mouth.

If you are staying at Utshwayelo you will not have access to the beach after dark as you will be limited to the gate times...nevertheless, it is an awesome part of the country, go and enjoy it - catching something will be a bonus.

What Dewald said.
Unfortunately you won't be able to fish in the dark. The gates to the mouth open from 6am to 6pm, which limits your beach fishing quite drastically, because before 6am and after 6pm are the best times...
Best chance of catching a Kingy is to catch a thornfish (plenty of them in the estuary) and slide it out live either side of the mouth.

You can get a night fishing permit for the mouth from the Parks Board , but its only from 6 pm to 10 pm , which only helps if the tides are right for that time period .

Eish, I had no idea about the gate times. What if i enter from another lodge? Is that possible?

Nope, one gate to access the reserve - it's a 2 kilometer drive from the gate to the beach and another 200m walk from the parking area..

It's still a great lodge and to be honest, it's not a good time of year to go fishing, rather focus on the holiday and snorkelling etc...and go fish inbetween.

Lekker! But surely there are some wavegarrick and kingies :gt: around that time. Im sure if i put in the effort with smaller lures I'll produce some bites. There's gotta be some flat fish and sharks around too.
I'll post a report after my trip, lets see if I can make a plan.

There should always be something biting off those rocks at mouth. Spring low is the best time. Like Reefman said , drop a live one in the channel just off those rocks ... 2 minute wait time and you should be on ...

Enjoy!
