Various retrieve styles are possible with the couta casting spoons. Rod tip position plays a big role. For example, with the rod tip facing upward at a 45 degree angle to the sea the spoon action is different to that when the rod tip is kept low facing the sea. With the rod tip up at 45 degrees angle a very slow retrieve actually produces lots of action with the couta casting spoon.
Then you can also start retrieving the spoon very fast even before it hits the surface (by flicking the bail arm of reel over with spoon still in the air) to keep it splashing on the surface for the first part of your retrieve. Or you can first let it sink to the bottom before starting a very quick retrieve. I fooled a big garfish on the latter retrieve style this morning. Usually they take the spoon when it splashes on the surface, but not this morning.
Then you can also allow the spoon to drop to the bottom and then retrieve the spoon at slow or medium speed with a jigging action, flicking the rod tip up and down during the retrieve. The kingies love this style, especially when it is still quite dark and you are using the glow color range of couta casting spoons.
The couta casting spoon is extremely versatile. I don't go anywhere without my pink and green glow couta casting no 1 and no 2 spoons!
