Nicely done man. Terry is one of the best guides I have met with regards to Fly fishing for barbel and fresh water in general.. After seeing what he got you guys into, I need to book him for a trip.

Well done,
brings back good memories with uncle Louis van der Westhuisen from the old Tvl fly tyers guild.
He used a Sage 10wt that he could cast a mile. Would always say, 'ag no, not another rock' and the rock sped of, lol.
He had a super long double handed slow long retrieve that moves a 3 or 4" Mrs Simpson without a pause.
What a gentleman and character he was. He taught many a young man to fish.

Gavin,

Which fly and technique did you employ?

Well initially I used the the two fly technique with the bigger fly first and a smaller heavier carp tugger at the tip which Terrence came up with. You cast the fly 2 or 3 times in the same place and let it sink for a couple of seconds, repeat that until you call the barbel into the area then hold on. My arm got tired half way through the day so I adapted the popping method to fly and that worked just as well and gave my arm some time to recover.

Do you have a diagram and/or picture of the setup? Particularly the carp tugger?

What are your go to flies for cats?

Yeah Ill tie up the 2 traces and send some pics just now. To be honest the barbel don't really care what the fly looks like but a BBB good for the weight and surface area. As soon as the whiskers touch something relatively solid he will engulf it furiously. The logic is that something (bird, frog, cricket) has fallen in the water and the barbel knows its there its just a matter of getting it as close to his whiskers as you can.

Much appreciated.

What size flies do you use? And the dam, it looks a lot like the bloemhof flats?

I planning a trip next weekend for some fly and/or artlure fishing, hence the 20 questions.

The bigger fly is a size 1/0 and the Carp Tugger is a size 10. The length between the two fly's can vary from 30cm to 45 50cm

This is the popping method. Now the length can vary even more so, usually around 30cm but because the silt was so bad at this spot the fly was latterly 10cm below the popper so it didn't get lost in the mud.
