New to Gauteng, Help
« on: September 12, 2015, 12:42:59 PM »
Hi guys.

Did a quick search looking for spots to fish in Gauteng. And all I could really find was the Vaal.

There is some other spots I have seen here and there, I may be wrong, but it seems Carp is the name of the game up here.
I don't mind catching them, or eating them either. But I prefer fishing for more aggressive fighters and staying away from the cast and wait fishing.

I must say I miss KZN. And don't get to travel at all.

I stay in Primrose. And I often travel to Benoni over the weekend. So anything starting as close to that as possible would be great. And if there is a charge to get in or a pay per catch charge at any of the locations you know of, then please let me know about that too.

Thanks for the help gents

After posting that I went on Youtube and saw guys catching Carp on a fly. I didn't know people did that. However they were all sight casting. And the places around the East Rand don't offer much opportunity for sight fishing. Has anybody got advice for catching carp on a fly in dirty dam water.

:welc: ... sorry can't help with fishing spots, but it's a shame you didn't post sooner, you could have joined the UA social at Leeukop today, the guys there would have been very informative.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

I don't want to have to travel to far. I would like to pop out for the day while my girlfriend is at work and then get back in time to fetch her. So about 45 minutes would help with that. But if I have to do some traveling it cant really be avoided.

There are quite a few spots within 45kms from Primrose. What are you mainly looking for? Bass, Barbel, Trout... ?

Well I used to do a lot of Bass fishing. And I started getting into fly fishing before I left KZN. So I would like to get some decent fly fishing in. But really any fishing where I can cast and retrieve. I don't like throwing out a line and waiting.

Check out these Venues: http://www.bestfishingspots.co.za/province.php?province=Gauteng

Also look up footloose trout farm which is in fourways. There are trout and bass and the guys get a lot of barbel, carp and vlei kurper on artlure.

Dowerglen (Willow park) dam is good for barbel and bass on lure and is only 15 minutes or so from you. There are quite a few venues in alberton, boksburg, benoni and springs that offer some good bass fishing...

How about the Vaal river? Yellows on fly is one of my most favorite things to do on a Friday afternoon, check the vaal river thread for more info on what to use and where to go.  :welc:
