Pleasure! Take another buket with no holes so when you at the spot you want to fish you can keep it close by to re-bait.

Pomene!!!

I love that place!!!!

Its a pity that Pomene View Lodge is closing down, the owner really knows his business when it comes to rock and surf fishing!!!
The main rocky outcrop off the old hotel is probably the hotspot of the area. They have hooked Marlin off those rocks, although never been able to land them....

The guys hire locals to row out there baits 200/300m offshore. They fish massive baits that most would only use for sharks but catch massive fish aswell. The spinning is also great in that whole area, and you can have a lot of fun while waiting for the big one. The tides are really strong off pomene so make sure your covered in the sinker department.

I am more the offshore fisherman, but had a lot of chats with "locals" from SA and lodge owners about the fishing. I believe "Rumoured" that a new fisherman's lodge is opening very close to the old hotel, walking distance to the rocks... Otherwise your only real bet is Pomene Lodge, which is 5mins drive to the surf fishing areas.

While I was there in June, a spearo speared a 50kg GT diving off the beach near the mouth, so the big boys are definitely there...
Make sure you take a lot of wire with you as there are a hell of a lot of toothy critters and massive sharks in the area, and even the small couta will slice through thick mono without you even knowing it bit. Trust me, we were drifting with live carapou and 23kg mono and all 3 rods sliced clean through the mono and not one drag went off not even a bounce of a rod...

The drive to Pomene is also fun and not as bad as everyone says it is, I was extremely nervous and actually had the lodge manager meet me in town to guide me through the rough trip, which was not needed in the end, as my little Mitsubishi triton handled 85% of the trip in 2x4 with lowered tyre pressure and only the last 3/4km engaged 4x4 high for the sand. If you keep to the tracks you don't even need 4x4 as the locals do trips daily in there South African GP Number plate 2x4 Isuzu bakkies and hardly ever get stuck. The trip took us exactly 1h15 from masinga.

There is a Chinese wholesaler in massing, stop and get all your provisions there like cooldrinks sweets and so on, as there is nothing in pomene. If you need booze or meat, you can get it at Taurus in Maxixe??? I think it is... but trust me its not cheap.

Tight Lines
Hope this helps.

BigLes... Great response. MUCH much appreciated. with regards to Pomene lodge, that is not of great concern since we are planning on "roughing it out" so we take our own lodge.. :lolo:  it comes equipped with zipper doors, two bedrooms, zipper window and no aircon... :hehe:

but jokes aside, if the lodge is no more, can the place still be inhabited with a tent and can the surf still be fished by a bunch of crazies :craz:  :sreel: ??

Wow, if you say Marlin off the rocks, im sure we can use kingies for live bait then. those rocks sound like the honeypot. if the Pomene lodge doesnt have campsites or is no more in existence, are there any campsites near the honeypot and do you need to book in advance or just rock up unannounced and book at the entrance/reception on the day of arrival?

Mobs... welcome. I hope you ready to rock the surf in Mozam bra. BTW guys Mubeen (AKA The Mobster) is one of our team mates.

Firstly, Bilene mouth is unpredictable and closes and opens as it pleases and if it's closed then it's not as good.

Pomene Beach Lodge is your best option and is still open. Pomene View Lodge that's apparently closing.

Pomene Beach Lodge has beach camping, self catering and fancy accommodation. It's best to book especially closer to season. Even for campsites.

Hi Guys

Long time no chat. Update on our plans:

we are confirmed a crew of 5 in my fortuner. Planning on pulling a challenger standard trailer with 10 inch wheels, and i made a make shift roof rack for storing the rods, camping chairs and maybe trailer spare wheel as well. whatever is bulky, lightweight, and doesn't mind getting wet if it rains while we are driving.

the plan is to hit it straight to pomene, cutting out milli and any other spots in the south.

plan A:

arrive at Pomene on the 28th November without a campsite booking and get something when we arrive. stay till 12 December and pack up and come home. taking sardines from here to compliment the fresh local bait we also plan on using. Obviously local fresh and live bait being the first priority, sards and chokka from here will be just in case all else fails at least we not high and dry. We want to take alot of poppers and plugs to use from the surf early morning and late evening and keep a livey out during the day and night. try popping from the rocks as well. hopefully if the moth is fishable we want to do some dropshotting there as well. plan A works if the fishing is good. by good i mean lots of GTs over 20kg at least.

Plan B:

after trying Pomene for 5 days and the fishing is not coming to the party, then on the 3rd December pack up and head down south somewhere. (we dont know where yet because we hoping if the fishing is bad we may be able to ask around and find out where it is on and go there). We planning on making Plan B destination in the south because its on the way home, but if its REALLY swak in the south also and lets say about 200 - 300 kms north its ON, then we'll go where the fish are. so plan B is mainly broken into 2 parts. priority 1 is find out where in the south its on and go there. if theres no info then we just gona go south anyway. priority 2 is if not so far north its on we going there. same fishing tactics will be used in all plans.

I recently heard form a guy who has been to Mambone last year that the "pomene north mouth is closed." that reallly puts a spanner in the works because is it even worth it going to pomene if the mouth is closed. secondly if this is true, what if other mouths are closed as well??? :dunno:

can anybody give some confirmed, RECENT info on the status of pomene river mouth, the fishing there, the general surf fishing in mozambique anywhere from Pomene down to milli? By recent info i mean the last 2 to 3 months at the earliest...

the other thing is, i beleive there are 2 resorts in Pomene; i.e. Pomene Lodge and Pomene Beach Lodge. One of them i believe is on the Estuary mouth and the other is not. Which is the one that allows camping and access to DEEP rock and surf as well as river mouth fishing (naturally the mouth that's OPEN)?

I can assure you the mouth is open and it is huge! Go Google it! North mouth is closed but you wouldn't have been able to fish it as the current rips through there.

Pomene Beach Lodge has best access to mouth and rocks fishing.
Paradise Beach Lodge is on the other side of the estuary, best for boat fishing.

Drop shot is great in the mouth for smaller fish, but there have been massive fish seen by spearos...  But not targeted as far as I know. Lots of small kingies, barracuda, etc.

It is a very secretive area... Your not going to get much info on it... I have been trying for years to get waypoints for reefs but no one would help. This area is kept a secret cause is a little magical. Don't think you will regret going there!

But in my opinion, I don't think you will catch large quantities of big GT's or fish in general, I think it's the best place of catching that new pb, new species, something really big. This is not St Lazarus Banks or mafia, or Basses or those... It's a great place to catch a 50kg gt from the side, or 35kg barracuda or 45kg king mackerel. Or whatever it is, it is one if the few shore based destinations you can target such big ones regularly.

There are several lodges in the area, some are less known than others.
When in Pomene, take the drive to Pomene View Lodge, they are apparently closed, but if the owners are there speak to them bout fishing the point, Maybe even try get him to take you out for the day to show you the ropes.

Don't forget the following:
Tyre Pump
Pressure Gauge
Emergency Patch Kit
2x triangles
Tow Stickers
ZA sticker
Diesel Injector Cleaner
basic tools
Sunscreen
