Mission Rocks - First Rocks
« on: September 02, 2015, 01:33:25 PM »
Does anyone know the coastline between First Rocks (7 km north of St Lucia) and Mission Rocks (around another 4 km further north)?

I have never visited this particular section before. It must be really pristine due to its remoteness. In two weeks time I am thinking of exploring this section for spinning (spoons & plugs). Will park at Mission Rocks and then walk down to First Rocks and back.

Any knowledge of this section will be appreciated!

Steenie, try this article... it provides a few pointers for Mission rocks, but mainly Bait fishing... might be worth a read... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=4857.msg61766#msg61766

Hi Steenie,

Absolutely right it is pristine waters between those two remarkable spots. Walking south from mission rocks the first good spot is pieres rocks (spelling might be off) its two small bays with three distinctive rock points towards the sea. Spend some time here, good for kingies might even get some late snoek, we usually fished for some rock fish here as well.

Then walking from the last bay still south wards towards St Lucia there are some scattered reefs, ledges, and rocks but way more beach than the first bit off walking. Good spots to try and get to the back reefs, enjoy the scenery as well as you would be walking along a lush green dune which is absolutely beautiful. After about a km or so you would start to see rocks on the horizon (next bend) if memory serves me right that is the last part off first rocks.

Getting to first rocks you'll once again get some good ledges and rock structure like mission rocks with some nice rocks and reefs going in deep. Heard of many stories of big kingies being landed there, so its also a good spot to take some time and work the water.

Best idea I could give is to be at the Vidal gate before it opens so that you could get to mission rocks quite early, from there its going to be a long day of walking for you so best be packed light with loads of water especially on a hot day. I found its best to walk the piece between mission and pieres on a spring low as then the flat rocks are exposed and it makes the walking just that much easier and the fishing for that matter.

Go check it out on google earth and follow the coastline from the parking area to familiarise yourself if you would like..

Anyway that's my 2c
Hope it helps and I hope you get into some good action, I'll be watching for the photos...

Cheers Heinrich

Thank you for the valuable insights! From my own experience at Vidal this year I know that one must make the most of the first hours after sunrise. So I think the best strategy is to enter the gate at 06h00, get to Missions and try and get to Perriers as early as possible. Spin there for snoek or whatever is around. If its quiet, then I will work south to explore the area. The photos looks absolutely amazing! You never know when you might encounter some baitfish action, so even after 9 in the morning success could still be possible.

Fortunately I can carry lots of water and lures, because I will be carrying no fish - tag and release will show that pristine area due respect!

I am off to St Lucia in 10 days time and I have been planning a serious overnight trip into that area, walking in from St Lucia swimming beach to first rocks for an early spinning session, work my way up towards Perriers, spend the night there and work my way back the next day.
I use this light weight beach cart to carry essentials, I also enables me to be spinning as I walk, and move from spot to spot with ease, just stop, cast cast cast, then move.
This photo taken at pompano rock, close to first rocks

Sorry for the hijack

Build the trolley myself, Alu angle frame, welded and covered with PVC, incredibly light and a breeze to push, beach wheels is the key here. 30cm diameter on 20mm SS shaft, no bearings, nylon on SS shaft. Rod holders, tackle tray etc. Best addition to my fishing ever. Makes one very mobile and you can cater for various scenarios. I even push a 30 liter live well around - no problems. Stop, cast, no bites in 15 minutes, reel in and move on. no backpack, nothing, even cart a chair around. Wheels float on top of sand no matter how soft.
