The Abu Toby spoons from Basil Manning are my favourite. Shad and black tip kingfish.
Education is important but fishing is importanter !

Halco Twisty Spoon, Abu Toby Spoon - Those spoons you cannot go wrong.

McCarthy Minnows & Paddletails - Good baitfish imitations.

Halco Hamma, Halco Max, good casting lure for Geets, Kob, Shad and I am sure Garrick will chow them nicely as well.

Ok, so I chose some all-rounders from my stash, from top to bottom:

1. GT Ice Cream Candy - Needlenose Plug
Great long casting surface lure and is taken by Garrick, Springer, various Kingfish species and larger Shad.

2. Abu Garcia - Toby Spoon
Good for shad and Kingies, but it doesnt have to be copper. The only reason this one is, is because I have a silver one (although smaller), and I have a shortage of copper colour when it comes to my metal spoons.

3. McCarthy 5" Paddletail
Shad (smaller shad tend to bite them in half though), Kob, various Kingfish species and a mate has caught Garrick on them. Darker colours contrasting more with the white belly seem to work better in cleaner clearer water.

4. CID Iron Candy - Bullet
This one is in "Green Glow" and has only caught Shad, but if I used it more I'm sure Kingies and Kob etc. would grab it. Best at daybreak and sunset (but maybe that's only because that's when I spin?). I'm going to get it in pink after watching my mate get shad after shad with a Kingfisher Jet Spoon in pink & glow.

5. Halco Twisty
Shad, Kingfish and Pickhandle Barracuda on the smaller ones.

6. Chase 5 Bullet Spoon
These spoons come in all silver (white metal mix), or with half glow from back to front on two sides. Shad and Kingies so far. The first day I used one a mate bought for me I got a 3kg Greenspot Kingie off the beach in Umhlanga. Plenty of shad thereafter up and down the coast, but also maybe just because it became my go-to spoon for a couple of years after the first Kingie.

The thing is, it's not so much the colour or the lure that elicits the bite as it is the action you give it, and you have to make them "provocative" in the water. Chucking them in clear water from an elevated position will show you what they do at different speeds. Depth also needs to be variable, as different species prefer feeding at different depths at different times and tides, and sometimes today you get a Shad with a lure swimming just below the surface at a decent speed and tomorrow the only time they bite is if it's slowly nearer the bottom.

Just have to spin regularly and try different things, taking note of tides, air pressure, wind direction, water colour, water temperature etc. when you do catch. There are so many variables but you will learn as you go along and have lots of fun doing it.

The Marias are rather dissapointing in the castability department.
The Ondes are quite deadly for shad.
The Toby spoons as well - they swim nice and slowly.
Nylon plugs are great for kingies, Garrick, and even shad. Also great castability.
7 or 8in paddletails are great for kob and garrick, but the shad decimate them.
I love throwing Halco roosta poppers - Garrick, Kingies, shad. they cast a lot better than you think.

On the top right hand side of your post you will see two buttons one says quote and the other one says modify (with a little pen on a notepad), if you click modify you can edit anything in your post after you've posted it. I use it alot to correct the millions of spelling mistakes I make.
Trouble is just fun you got caught having
