Will this work?
« on: September 13, 2010, 09:12:21 PM »
I was given a Rapala X-Rap Extreme Jointed Shad by a friend. Tech details are: XJS - 13
Swimming depth : 4 - 8
Prof.Nage.(whatever that means) : 1,2 - 2,4m
13cm 5-1/4 ''     46g  1 - 5/8 oz
I just wanted to know if it would be suitable for shore spinning and if so, what I could target with it. Its got a red head and body is mullet coloured.
Thanks

Those jointed X-Raps are deadly my friend! Must work, the only down side is that you would need to fit weighted hooks to get some casting distance and that might kill the action of the lure a little. But it will still be better than the standard X-Rap which works well as it is.

I say killer!

I have a number of X-rap 10cm 13g xtreme action slashbait (XRSS10)lures: swimming depth 4'-6' prof nage 1,2-1,8 (this I assume is the metric of swimming depth)  I bought them on a special deal

I have found them impossible to cast! They are way too light and wind resistant. Bennie - you mentioned that one can use weighted hooks - where do I get those? I have even thought of wrapping solder wire around the hooks or something - but am aware that their action will be affected.

other than using them for trolling (or close range in an estuary) I find them pretty useless - and I bought 12 of them....stupid me, I was just so excited to come across them becasue they looked so deadly. I have caught a few shad on them trolling behid a paddle ski, thats all

Rods,

They work very well. I have a couple of them and chuck them at everything and anything. Casting distance might be a problem from shore.

Bennie how about, drilling a hole and pouring in something heavy?

Ironically. it was the same advice I gave to Kieth Hokley the other day when he wanted to weight bass lures for salt water casting off a ski.

Not sure if you can drill and fill this one - it has a rattle inside. Also - such a pity to change that deadly rear hook - and lose that bit of flash tied on. I also wonder if you can get weighted hooks small enough for the lure. See the pic (just one of the six colours that I have 2 each of - yes, thats 12 seemingly useless lures for me....but I suppose that the tigerfish will deplete that stock the next time i go to the Zambezi!

I like these weighted trebles. Where can I get some. I normally have to flatten a piece of lead with a hammer and wrap it around the shaft. Does not look nice at all

Before you start drilling holes into the lure! If you do, it may be a disaster!

Lures need two things that give them action. 1 - They need weigh but it needs to be in the correct place. The best place will be right by the belly ring. The other thing it needs is buoyancy. If you do not have the buoyancy, the lure will roll from side to side or even just roll over considering the tag point is below the lure which is not a good. And with a lipped lure, it will keep jumping up. I would not recommend it with this type of lure unless you can ensure the weighting is only in the belly.

Bennie - so you are saying that I should only put a weighted hook on the belly? Would that not really put the balance out?

In my opinion, there is not much I can do with these lures except troll with them and use them where I can do short casts - like an estuary or river....casting in the surf is out I think. Still my best option is to feed them to the tigers on the zambezi....they feed along the banks, so cast out, let the lure go in the current giving enough distance and then retrieve and bring back a smashed piece of plastic!

What about using a running sinker rig or sliding rig to get the weight with out impeding on the lure action? Might look messy / tacky and not sure how it would fish?

that also affects the lure movement a lot - have tried, but also, the weight in two places (sliding sinker and the lure) makes casting not so great

Thanks for all the replies guys. Will have a look in the Richardsbay/Empangeni area for these weighted hooks, otherwise will have to wait till I get a chance to go to Durbs. Do the hooks come and diff weights, Bennie, and if so, what weight would you recommend. Thanks again.

Not really as far as I could tell. I'll weigh those and let you know but I seem to think they were just labelled as weighted hooks.
