Trout Season Is Here!
« on: May 13, 2014, 11:26:06 AM »
After a long wait and a lot of anticipation, it was time to go to Millstream once again, I love this place. We left after we voted (Myself, Jason and Gavin) and checked in at 2.30pm, and then the mayhem started. Gav was only with us until Thursday but he managed about 20 fish in this time. And then it was Jason and I who fished until we left on Sunday, we managed 96 fish between us, one of the best ever at Millstream. He managed to get his PB a male of 2.6 kilograms, and I lost my PB, the biggest Rainbow I have ever hooked, was on for 3 minutes or so, and a couple of jumps close to the bank the hook (for no reason) popped. Estimated the fish at 3 kgs at least. Our best session was at a trophy dam called Solitary Reaper, 6 hours and 35 fish all between 1.2kgs and 2.6kgs with the average at about 1.6kgs. My biggest for the trip was a hen of 1.9 kgs. We had a lot of fun and caught on a variety of techniques and flies, the flies listed below:

Dry: DDD, Orange DDD, Royal Coachman, Black Humpey, Stimulator.

Nymph: Black PTN, Olive GRHE, GRHE.

Wet: White Fritz, Orange Egg, Woolly Bugger (All colours except purple, brown and white), White Zonker.

Here are the pics  :trout:

The fight with that zebra on the end of the line must have been spectacular. What was your goto pattern for that  particular species? Did you long line release it or did you manage to bring it to the net?

The Trout arent bad either. Well done to you lads.

It took a size 1 DDD fished on the grass with some slight wind, it unfortunately broke the tippet  :hehe:

I have heard that the initial run is quite strong. If the drag is set on full and you fish heavy tippets, you end up skiing barefoot. Not too bad on water but on dry land it becomes a pain in the bum. w;k

Jokes aside, there was an article in one of the mags a few years ago where a guy was fishing for trout and he hooked a Hippo on a streamer. It was fun and games until the Hippo turned and came straight for him. The wake on that water was something else and he just dumped the rod and ran off. :hehe:

:hehe: :hehe: The Zebra cant leave the DDD alone, sometimes you can catch them on a flashback nymph fished in tall grass.  :hyst:

Wow Koos, thats hectic, I would hate to have been that angler!!!

I am so glad you said flashback.
Bareback would also be okay as I know you would imply that you were wrestling with a beast.
But if you said Brokeback......O Jinne I dont know how I would respond to that.
