Nymphing Literature
« on: December 17, 2013, 02:59:31 PM »
Gents,
Can  anybody recommend a good fly fishing reference book. I’m particularly  interested in nymphing from an Entomology point of view as well as fishing  methods and techniques.
Thanks,

It is useful to understand a bit about what nymphs look like - so look at these:

There are so many books on flyfishing  - and each with an emphasis of sorts. Here are three general ones that I would suggest (in n particular order):
- The South African Fly Fishing Handbook by Dean Riphagen - it has a good section on nymphs and how to fish them
- Still Water Trout in South Africa - also by Dean Riphagen
- African Fly Fishing Handbook by Bill Hansford -Steele

I wouldn't really buy a book because you can better target your knowledge needs through the 1000's of websites on flyfishing - search and you will find everything you would ever want to know

You could also look at the Nedbank, Favourite flies and Techniques series of books.
I think that they may be up to volume 5 by now.
Each section is written by a well respected angler who also explains how and why to fish the patterns described.
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

Visit www.netbooks.co.za they have a wide selection.

I would start off with Bill Handsford Steele's African Flyfishing Handbook. If you can get your hands on Dean Riphaegens first book, you would be in for a treat.

The thing is do you want to nymph for trout or Czech Nymph for Yellows?

There are stacks of books on both these.
If you go for Czech Nymph you need to look at books from Europe. There is a DVD called Euro Nymphing that is worth a look and Oliver Edwards also did a Czech Nymp video where he ties the flies and fishes the flies he tied. Now all of these are available from Netbooks. You will not find any other bookshop that caters for Flyfishing like Craig Thom does at Netbooks.

Shout if you need anything else.
