Yes or use a weighted caddis. Silverstrome yellows and muddies love a green caddis.

Agree Higgins.  Get your drift right and you are 95.75% into fish already.

Walks don't be skaam  and try a Red hot spot Brassie at Strome as well . 2/3 of my fish landed there this season ( +/- 6 session) have been on the Brassie fished as a 3rd fly 450 mm up from the control fly.

We hit Strome yesterday, and at first it was tough. In the end Sean, Gavin, Myself and a newbie (He caught his first Yellow), managed about 20 fish, mostly Yellows, but it as weird as we all caught these fish (In different areas) between 12 and 3ish. Gavin got a few nice fish over 2kgs, mine were all under a kg.

Braved the elements yesterday morning just below Parys. I arrived in a steady to heavy drizzle and left pretty much in the same conditions. Fished for about 3 hours before I gave up due to hypothermia setting in. My only companions on the water was 2 otters, a huge monitor lizzard and 2 giant kingfishers no other human in sight.

Started very slow but finally cracked the code about one and a halve hours into the session. The colour for the day was dark tan and the size small size 18. Got 4 yellows all decent size ranging from 1.5 to just over the 2 kg. The biggest one gave me good rock hopping exercise as I was not able to keep it in the pool and had to go fetch it in the main river. Flows were about 30.

Also caught a new species on fly as well as a new species for the vaal for me. A little greedy tilapia of sorts. Do not know the exact name my guess is banded tilapia or vlei kurper.

Think you are right Walks it is a dwarf kurper see the dwarf has a rounded tail and the vlei a square tail. The body shapes also differ with the vlei being more rounder than the vlei

Also was reading some stuff a few weeks back, there are quite a lot of Dwarfs in the Vaal River system, especially closer to Parys...

There are around 30 or so species in the system, probably more though... A few species of rock catfish, some areas have Canary Kurper (Dont know how), Moggel, a few species of Barb, Mosquitofish and Vlei Kurper.
