Also guys, any advice for a "newbie", especially for Strome, that place is awesome. Fished Copper John and Zak as the control and orange hotspot ptn as the point. Managed 2 landed fish and 2 hook ups, but one guy must have caught 6 or 7 yellows in the same drift I hooked one.

What other combo's can I try on the control especially?

Black nymph is my go to fly ! Never failed ! Also something with a bit of flash always works....

Not sure I'd use a zak...
try small caddis styles as a control with a ptn hotspot or brassie... go small...14 and 16

Agree with Homes on the flies. My goto is normally mustard caddis as control  size 12 or 14 and then orange hotspot or GRHE or black flashback typically size 16 or 18 on point. I hardly change my control but used to change around the point quite often. Recent experiences have me concentrate more on the drift than flies though.

On occasion this season I was in the same position where guys were catching the fish drift by drift and me only getting 1 or 2 fish. Changing flies to the same flies made no difference out of desperation I added a tiny splitshot above the control and started getting fish at the same interval. So now I concentrate on getting my weighting and drift right first before tinkering with flies.

I agree.

If you cant get your flies to where the fish are eating, they will not eat it. Once you are in the correct area you can concentrate on what they are eating. The water is still nice and warm so pick up some rocks and look what is under them. Study the stokvis that you land. Try and match your flies to the the goggas(Size and shape).

You will also find that wading around like a plonker will scare the fish. Sometimes you just have to stand still after moving and the fish will return, drink a beer eat a snack...
I have a hypothesis that people catch fish after changing flies not because of the fly, but because the fish has returned.

Interesting, thanks Pieter... Would it be wise to use a weighted PTN Hotspot as control and a small unweighted nymph at the point?
