Spinning Southern Mozambique
« on: October 25, 2013, 04:12:02 PM »
Hi All,

Off to Malongane in Dec for 8 days...I have a couple of questions regarding lure spinning I hope some of those with experience of the region can ease assist:

Am lead to believe that Baby Bass coloured Flukes are deadly for the various species kingies. Is this true?

Are Snoek catchable off the bricks shore game style?

How far is Fredericos from Malongane? Is it possible/worth it to walk along the beach?

Picastor, the fishing along the beach at d'Ouro and Malongane is notoriously poor due to the locals using nets to plunder the nurseries. Your only chance of catching is at Frederico's. You can drive there and then it's about a few 100m walk down the beach.
The lures you need for S Moz are the same as Northern KZN - GT Ice creams, Needle nose plugs, Iron Candy spoons, IC Foil spoons and Couta Casting spoons.

Never seen a Snoek caught in Southern Moz off the beach, but anything is possible. Have seen some nice Queenfish come out at Frederico's and just South of d'Ouro (SA side).

Thank you REEFMAN.

Are there not even wave garrick, shad and juvenille kingies around the point at malongane?  Reason I ask is I was hoping to "keep busy" with plastics and the like there between sorties to fredericos.

Do you suggest then that I kit up to primarily fish from the bricks at fredericos?  Is it safe there to fish alone/leave a vehicle?

I was last there about 4 years ago, and we used to park near the beach at Frederico's and walk the rest of the way. Never had a problem before. Don't know if that's changed.
Wave Garrick and Shad yes, but that's about it, really. At the point at Malongane, you should have fun catching Juvenile Reef fish.

Picastor, you can get juvenile Kingfish (2-3kg) in the bay right in the corner of the bay where the boats launch from, at pushing to high but time and tides must coincide with sunrise and sunset try small spoons and plugs.

Like Reefman said, for some obscure reason R&S fishing in Southern Mozambique is not very good and temperamental at best. That said I've seen a +40kg Kingfish caught just 200/300 meters north of the "old" top entrance to the beach (think it might be closed and overgrown now. That is your best bet at Malongane for throwing bigger lures, bait fishing and sliding for sharks.

Again except for Wave Garrick and Shad, don't expect fireworks.

Measured the distance from the point in Malongane to Frederico's - it's about 6.5kms...  :shk Need to be fit to do that with tackle.

Here's the shot from Google Earth.
Much easier to drive there, but you need a 4x4.

Having not seen the structure or nature of the bricks a couple more questions please specifically about Fredericos:

Apart from sunrise and sunset there a best time tide wise?
Is it worth spinning during the day?
Are there ledges or is it casting towards reefs?
Apart from GT's and Queenfish what other species and sizes are prevalent that will readily take spoons and plugs? I have Iron Candy spoons in Glow and Pink, White Chartreuse Spro bucktail Jigs, Sardine Onda's, Chatrtreuse pepper jerk shads...still need to buy plugs. Will get GT Ice Creams as well - are Halco Roostas worth a shout there?

Lastly anyone maybe have some pics of Fredericos?

Member Ian F was at Frederico's in April this year, maybe give him a shout. He should be able to fill you in on current circumstances...

Hi Picastor

I fly fished and threw lures in that area for a month 2 years ago, Malongane can be a bit tricky but if you go just to the right of the launch site and throw there you will get wave garrick, the odd blue fin and big eye kingy. As the tide changes from low walk out onto the rock with a light stick and throw along the rock and back into the bay for kingies, but watch the tide and move off when starts to push too hard.

At Ponta, walk around the point at low tide, to the right, ie back towards SA side, you will find some beach and a big square rock that you can fish off, great spot blue fin and wave garrick, it goes out to see so you can actually fish 3 sides of the rock.

If you are up for a bit of a drive and don't mind paying to get in the gate, go to Ponta Mamoli for the day (it's not far past Fredricos) If you have a flat day with low tide you can fish off the front point, great for kingies.

Otherwise fredricos is always  great bet, most of the time I fly fish hense the low tide advise as I need to get out onto the rock but I have also found the same for spinning there, about an hour after low is a good time to start but again watch the water and the tide.

As for finding your way, if you are staying at Malogane you will more than likely hire a guy to look after your camp, before you hire one at the gate just check with him if he speaks English and he will go with you and show you the way to most places and look after you car, if all else fails just ask at the dive camp.

Tight lines.

Hey there Sea Dweller, very good advice there, was a good trip wasn't it. Just an observation, you will be very surprised at how they have developed Mamoli, you cant just rock up and pay any more, it is a full blown resort now and seriously guarded, unless you are a guest, No Entry. Fredricous remains the best bet. All other info spot on, Picastor should do well with all that:-)
Take it easy.....if you get it easy.......take it again.
