Shivaan the big guns are good hooks but quiye pricey! Kendal rounds are good value for money just male sure you buy the brown hooks. Gamakatsu also make some good hooks. Diachii are good but rust easily

I will always suggest using a 'more expensive ' hook in areas where you dont loose a lot of tackle , But like the guys mentioned , Kendal rounds are 100%

I went out and got the big guns. But in the future I shall give the kendals a shot. Right, got my tackle in check. Now just waiting for some good conditions to go out and throw. Durban weather hasnt been kind to us at all recently  are there any socials coming up in durban? Would be good to meet the ultimate anglers in person? Il bring some samoosas

top thread to start and guys who provided information thank you alot I am a novice and will begin my flat fish campaign at the end of october will definately be using the site info.
Just wanted to find out if I need to slide a bait out for these fish or bigger speciment, you say using a grap with wires is not advantageous how else to I slide a bait out .....or is throw baits just the best option. 
 
yet again guys shot for the info if I happen to get anyflat fish will most certainly post on site

If you're sliding, then you have to use a wire grap or you'll never get the sinker to sit properly. For throw baits targeting flatties, use a cone sinker, esp off a beach. Throw just off a bank and you should come right, esp with a makkie head bait.

No problem mate. Go for smaller throw baits (smaller mackies with a red-eye fillet on the outside) and place your cast well i.e. just off a bank where waves are breaking. Often that will be pretty close in, so a far cast is not needed, esp on a pushing tide.


Cones only really work when the current isn't too hectic. But what they do well, is let your bait get coverage as they move with the ebb and flow of the ocean. So throwing onto a bank, with time your bait may land in the gutter. That's if you haven't been eaten already.


IMHO flat fish are the most exciting non-eds to catch and my absolutely fave is the giant guitarfish.

Very nice to see some feedback for you guys on the thread .


So sound advice , although most of the time I am seeking advice how to avoid them lol .


Just out of interest sake on the topic of the diamonds / butterfly rays .
Now I am not a big in ed angler ,  I observe my surroundings like most ( these days you have to observe more behind your back )  on springtides , and a strong wind , the water comes just over the beach in areas , creating large shallow ( 30 cm deep) lagoon type ponds . I have often seen these big diamonds flapping in 10 cm of water , the lagoon/ ponds  never last for more than a day , and most of them become castualties , I have often seen more than one or 5 that died in this manner .
