the eagle ray and duckbill look very similar...I thought that the one that I caught was a duckbill..now not so sure...

was using pinkprawns,trying for steenies at Danabaai 1st beach when I fowl hooked one in the tail...wow did I battle with that thing...was only about a 8kg model but stuffed my left arm and shoulder up...

total fight about 15-20min.eventually the hook pulled after running back and forth for 10 min. straightsticking it in the shoredump/backwash...

The head isn't too heavy to cast, but more often than not you'll hook a flatfish fairly close in. I flap a mackrel, meaning I cut the fish from the tail to halfway down the macky, on both sides. I then remove the spine and fold the 'flaps of fillet back towards the head and tie them up with cotton. I then put a 8/0 - 10/0 circle hook through the jaws of the mackie and throw it. Look for a rip or a gully and throw in there.

A chokka slide is deadly for big sandies and I'm sure a honey or duckbill will jump on one as well.

Fishing the durban KZN coast the blue rays prefer the cooler water. We have caught blues on bloody, fresh baits, normally a mix between sard belly and chokka.
The brown skates prefer the slightly warmer water and also caught on a mixture of sard/mackeral and chokka.
We also get the honeycomb here, and some large speciemens too. Got one of 60kg a couple years back on a whole slide mackeral looking for a shark. one of the best fights of my life !!

skates cruise around most parts of the ocean, but as most have said, sandbanks and flat beaches are your best bet. You will find blues right behind the shorebrake, the like to cruise the channel between the sand bank and the shorey, so no need to throw far.

I dont do much rock and surf andymore, so my advise may be a little out dated.

I've had a chat with Allistair from Basil Manning Umhlanga, very helpful oom. Says that in the umhlanga area there are blue rays, browns, and the odd Diamond.
In the Ushaka/Vetchies area there are Duckbills, friend of a friends landed one (see pic). Not sure what else is around there.

Reefman, thats a beautiful Honey right there! the Spearnose and duckbill got to also be the prettier of the lot. the Black Ray looks mamba scary!

thnx Reefs but the one I got was fowlhooked in the tail,so only saw it from behind for a while before the hook pulled from it's tail while in the backwash...also first time catching one as I don't target them,hence my confusion...thought it was a duckbill..

could still be too...

My faverite bait for duck bull and bull rays have to be a chokka head with its intestines still intact. Normaly I will target them on or just off the bank. For Diamonds I like to use a small hole mullet, ded or aline. For the blues I like a messy sardine bait. Lots off blood and guts.

e black , blue stingray and eagle and duckbill rays, and the spearnose skate en biscuit skate.

Like the guys have said soft fish baits and squid has worked the best for me in the past.

Ray I can remember reading a post of yours where you had some fun with light tackle and some flat fish at Soverby.Can you maybe give me any tips on where along that stretch is the best and what bait.Keen to take a trip there soon.

Dont know if you yet (old news already) but last year the lapa burntdown, might be arson. Anyways so the farmer closed off that area with high fences etc he got gatvol.

So now the furtherts you can go is the pump station a km away from the old lapa. But its fine its a lekker walk :)

And the fish are starting to go o the bite now as we speak. Been having alot of SE lately and its still pumping over the weekend.

Take throw net with, then you gooi in between the skuite at the harbour, plenty mullets around. You ccankeep them alive if u want. But I just throw the heads and or I cut them like you would fillet a fish and put it on as is

Thanks for the info Ray.Yes was supprised when i went there last time and the lapa was no more.So I fished at the first place you can turn off on the Soverby road, only managed a sandie and gurnard tho.By the harbour do you mean in Vredenburg?

Use a Cone sinker or Bottle sinker , They get spooked when they come sit on your bait , and the wires/nylon pokes them .

As far as I know , and checked last , no one are allowed to throw net in any harbour , correct me if I am wrong .

I only fish Mustard kendelrounds. Never had any problem with hooks braking or straightning.
