UA National Prefered Supplier List (Recommend a fishing gear supplier)

Because we don't live in one area, and some of us travel, it's good to have access to a list of suppliers that deserve a mention. Let's be honest, nothing messes with your out of town fishing trip more than having to visit stores that are unfriendly, pricey or just don't know and give you bad advice.

Always good to hear where to buy, the service level, price, range....I'll start:

Why I like/dislike this store:
Peter took over from Myburgh, who I had a great relationship with already. If you ever pass through Knysna, it is worth a stop because I found that their prices where better than any other store that I had seen in the Western Cape. The range of lures and rods is very good and the knowledge of the lagoon and R&Surf is good. They are all very friendly and the one thing I liked is that they always made a fuss over my son's photo's of his catches. I am yet to have an unpleasant shopping experience there. Highly recommended.

I went to school with all three Alcock brothers and they are such great guys. Their knowledge is unsurpassed and they can teach just about any fisherman something. They are able to put you ON THE FISH....yes that is right, their advice and knowledge is solid. You may pay a couple of Rand extra for that lure from them, but the advice you will get is second to none. (I would rather pay R55 for a lure and catch than R52 and catch nothing - you know what I mean). They will give you the lures that are working, tell you where to use them to target your chosen species and what time to go do it. Incredible. They are so good at what they do that I was on the Swartkops river when I was much younger and they came walking along and hit skipjack as they entered the river. The Skipjacks hit us too, but how they timed that visit so precise is beyond me. they are all friendly at the store and one only needs to watch their DVD's to see that they love what they do and are keen to share! Visiting that store is an experience!

Struisbaai Supermark /Slaghuis and Tackle shop  [yes Seriously]


Owner has had the place for donkey years .
Its a well established small shop with the larges area a fishing tackle area .


Range 5 stars [ its suprisingly well stocked from top end gear entry level combos , enough commercial gear too]
Price 4 Stars  , notting wayout expensive .

I have been coming to struis for 17 years , this lil shop has always been here , and are always stocked , I dont go in there often but when I do , I always leave with bits and bobs , just because theres a friendly atmosphere, and has supplied , what I needed when ever I needed of forgot it at home , which happen often , the elastic / you knife . For the guys with boats , they have what you need from Spinners to lead to Rapalas ect
I think the success of this shop [ or the fishing deparment]  are so well stocked because the owner know what to stock in season , I have seen his MO , he stocks the 7 foot or 8 foot combos cheap , all the holiday makers that want to get into fishing buy one or 2 , when they catch a fish , there back in there , buying more and upgrading to new tackle , this has given the ower strong buying power , to stock other pricey items , Hes forsure good a good sence of business , you will get advice , good advice if the older guys are behind the counter , but dont bargian on him being there , and dont be suprised if you have to go call the casheir in the from of the supermarket to assit you with something , they are freindly and keen to help , they also have bait and in season open till 10 .

It would be very unfair to single out any tackle shop/s up here in Gauteng because most of them provide a good service, are great guys, and if you know your stores (and the people) you will know where to find the best deals for specific brands and equipment.
 
I must say it is somehow strange that we have many more tackle shops up here and clearly we get better prices than you poor guy's who live right there by the sea and fish almost everyday.

Toppie, I don't buy in Cape Town because the service level is not great. If I can find a store that does their part, I'd buy from them, but until now, it's been a bit of a disaster. What might help someone like myself is if you mention a couple of your favourite stores in your area. I am always keen to have a look, and I want to avoid walking into a bad situation and I am sure that I am not alone. Eg. If you live in the East, maybe mention a few that are there? We can go on recommendation alone if you want to avoid ratings.

All Out Angling: in Lenchen Avenue Centurion. Staff know their stuff and they carry a broad range of equipment. The shop is well laid out and clean Prices are not bad but not the cheapest place around.

Commercial Marine Boksburg: Located on the corner of North Rand road and something the shop is great for boaters and carries a decent spread of tackle but can be lacking in some things. Their in house brand offers good value. The staff are pretty knowledgeable. The shop is clean and well laid out. Pricing fair.
Score: 3.5/5

Fishing Pro Shop: Just past the intersection of Hans Strydom and Lynwood Road. Not sure what area that falls under? Wapadrand?
Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. The shop is quite small and while they have most of the basics they don't always have those other out of the ordinary things you need. Pricing is fair and the shop is tidy and easy to find things.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff, best prices for terminal tackle, reels and carp baits in Gauteng. I dont shop anywhere else, except for really niche items that much bigger shops stock like certain soft plastics.

Fly fishing only shop, but tying equipment are their specialty. The staff are always friendly and you seldom walk out within a few minutes, the fee coffee is great. The dam close by give you the opportunity to test the gear that not a lot of other places offer. Really friendly and great advice. Can order stuff online, that makes it so easy for me. I love going into a shop, but sometimes I just don't have time. Open till late on Tuesdays (21:00 ish) as well as they have fly tying evenings, but its a great time for shopping.


Specialist fly shop, talk papgooi, and they might think about what could happen when drinking to much at a braai and there is a food fight...

[Half-Pint]

Mias Benoni: corner of Howard avenue & Voortrekker. Pretty decent range of stock and they will generally have all you're looking for. Pricing is all over the show, somethings will be massively over priced while others are a bargain. I can't speak to the knowledge of the sales guys as I only go there knowing what I want. Shop is clean, well laid out and organized.

Western Accessories Boksburg: Key Largo Center corner of North Rand road and Trichardt. This is a tough review! They have a huge range of stock and some real bargains but the shop is always a mess and you need to sift through the new stock to find things markes with the old prices. The staff knowlesge is shocking and actually a bit of a hazard to anyone who doesn't  know their stuff. They have tried to sell me a 4oz rod to target non eds .
