hows the fishing going in struis-baai?
New to this platform
but here it goes
ill be in struisbaai by the end of the week could you recommend some leka spots to catch fish from the beach/rocks as i want to teach my Fiance to fish . We are looking for a place for light tackle set up as i own 2 x 10 ft rods . would i need a longer rod ? we would just like to target medium size fish and something for the braai.

10ft should be fine. It all depends on how rough your fiance wants to go :) lol. "Die Brood" is a nice low tide spot, Die plaat (pretty much anywhere along that stretch, just read the sea for channels etc. Suiderstrand is also a nice stretch of beach for beginners on high tide as you do not need to cast far, or alternatively you can do the harbour thing, it may be very busy though, which is a pain. There is a nice spot directly in front of Arganauta Park (house with the red roof to the right of the parking. The shipwreck is also nice but not ideal for beginners as it is rather rough and you may loose a ton of tackle. As for bait, I would suggest going for good all rounds baits, such as chokka (blob bait) or bloodworm. Wind turns SE/ESE on Friday so your timing should be pretty spot on!!!

The conditions , have been very pooor , but here’s some large leervis around .....

Krakers last year this time was full up , but , this year I haven’t work hard for them , and the other guys have been putting in time , also with zero luck .

If crackers were full up last year, hope the ous put the big ones back as they are semi-resident..otherwise they won't be back this year.. Same regarding putting big leeries back..after 3 or more good sardine runs the ous up north this year were like, where are the leeries? Ja they caught them the previous years and did not release them so well that is what happens and although leeries are very quick growing the stocks recruitment cannot take breeders being removed from the sea. If you read old books the crackers used to be full up at muizenberg, houtbay and hermanus..now when was the last crackers you heard of taken there? Kalk bay harbour wall used to be THE spot for leeries..50lb'ers taken some years, when last that happen..Crackers more resident than leeries and not slow growing but not fast like leeries either. The big females keep the stock supplied with new recruits as with all fish..Out more east of you in less accessible spots of you the rockpools are so full up of baby crackers you would not believe it, more little crackers than blacktails, shows one what it is supposed to be like..I got one long deep rockpool that is quite a way up on the rock from the sea, the tide must be spring high and swell very big to wash in there, tjoe, there are about 20/30 crackers in there since last year that I keep an eye on..biggest is almost dinner plate size now, I'm training them, everytime I go fish there I feed them with some alikruk and periwinkles..one day when they are bigger and in the open sea they must come looking for my sinker splash..fascinating to watch their habits and nature..learned a lot from them haha..very wary and smart and they like to check food out before eating it..once they get on a chow and other fish are stealing the food they get the moer-in and go and grab it for themselves..yup know what that take feels like! Thats when you get pulled down, flat!

PE and mosselbay used to be THE place for summer large adult katonkels from the side, referring to couta there not bonito, king mackerel..well that is the "basin effect" in action there and the stock is obviously not near the same size it used to be in decades past..and the stock retreats the limit of its' range, same with cracker.. On the plus, bait is coming back, chokka is back and the bonitos (sarda sarda) stock is recovering nicely the last few years and coming earlier and staying later and there are more and more..leeries were doing that until the last few elninos and nice sardine runs..but there is hope if we are smart in our harvest.

OK rant and off topic detour and all aside, hope you guys get stuck into them at some point, the fish seasons are late all over this year..

I don't think ous realise how hammered our fish stocks are..I went down some sea cliffs last week to an almost unfished spot, where very little to no boatfishing happens as no launch for a long way east or west and inaccessible cliffs..and the water was warm and fishing was on at the deep water spot.. From my first bait in the morning, I got four fish on the first bait and carried on till my chokka ran out, then it continued all day on sards. That chokka I grabbed outa the freezer was so rotten it stank offensively but fish were eating it (although I could feel em spitting it out quickly, but it was wall to wall fish down there. For someone who has never caught a roman from the side, I caught so many last week I lost count after releasing the 20th one or so. I took the last one home of abouts a kg to chow. The whole day was throw for throw red roman..if I hadn't hooked a fish within a minute of sinker hitting bottom, I'd reel in a put a new bait as it would be gone..Every throw was either a fish or a rebait in a minute..I caught so so many..Unbelievable, except they are semi-resident to resident and largely unfished..so it blew me away to see what an unfished population looked like, I don't want to even guess at how good the fishing offshore must be on the reefs..Guys catch dustbin lid sized miss lucies in the gullies there, wa-wiel dagaraads and big bastermans in the gullies so it shows one how f-ked things really are in most other places..

But ja the last time someone had fishing like that in other places ago was decades ago..

There are much I can add .

The peninsula and surrounds , receive tons of waste , pollution .

The the city of Cape Town , pumps tons of waste into the ocean for many years m this has been going on for many years . Have a look at some of Jean Trefsons pics on this matter on FB .

Places like the Louwrens river , in strand , are severely polluted and you will not believe that , I know of guys catching trout on flies in the Louwrens , but the chemical , fertilizers minerals , that gets flushed from the gholfclub and many other residential areas , that sits in the strand ... not to mention the seedy guys , taking anything that swims , I have seen this many times , I have also seen many time DAFF , not doing their job .

Someone on IG , also mentioned the leervis , that hardly makes it to cpt , after the sardine run . And cpt are only a half stop , it’s been proven they go up al the way to Angola annually .

The only thing , I can add , the past 4 years , I have experienced some extremely good Kob fishing , some days we released up to 20 fish , not one undersize ... this has happed at least twice this season already ...

I also have to admit that , the conditions we have to have to get the kob eating , have changed a lil .
But the South easterly are still very much in the pattern ....

No he’s got no license Or permit to sell jack .

Who mentioned him here ? Think he got locked up a while ago ... funny thing about those two , they dig those worm , for people on order .... they often bum rides from them to Suiderstrand to go dig there , DAFF , often confiscate the worm they selling blatantly .... but they just do it the next day agian .
I would rather , be concerned the number of kids , White kids , sending them to guy buy Meth in molshoop .

But let’s not derail the report , I for one note , your input .

Can who ever made it an add please edit your post , I can monitor the forum 24/7.

So we made it safely to struissie
Shjo but it was extremely busy I don't remember struisbaai having so many people in it when visting my grandparents
I fish the harbour which was super fun on super light tackle got alot of harders and one big 500gm strepie.

I tried to fish the spots but there atleast 5 guys on each spot so we moved to waenhuiskraans I had no luck on the beach before the cave

What Rigs are you guys using ,size of hooks and sinkers I use the old slide Trace 4/0 hook and 4oz ,

Do you guys think die hoop ,infanta are as busy as struisbaai?
Do you think the fishing is the shame where would my best places be to get some fish

The conditions are not conducive to fishing from the surf now , for the usual suspects . We , need some easterly and or south easterly , strong for at least one day .

Morning all,

I had a very disappointing time at Lamberts this last week (yes I know it is not a good area to fish). Only got 6 small sharks.

This was my first attempt at sea (surf) fishing and still have a lot to learn.

I will be in Struisbaai on 9th and maybe the 10th of Jan 2019.

Any advice if I want to fish for edible's?

Wednesday are condition wise very good .lot of the guys will be out , including myself , if I can get wAway at my shop ...

Some verrry good fish kob in arniston .
Some,kob came out in Suiderstrand on low toward Pietie se huis , fish with a 4/0and the freshest squid you can get , if it’s pink don’t even buy it ,.

Marius , the Johan’s and Werner had each a good kob livebait , on plaat .
