Went to struis yesterday with my dad. We were planning on doing some spinning for leeries then hitting the beach by langerzandt but when we got to the beach we found the water flat, warm, crystal clear and sterile. I have never seen water which looks more like blaasoppie water. Tried a bit anyway. It was pretty easy to get a sinker far out because you could wade behind the waves then just walk til it got too deep so I got a slide sinker nice and far out. I then slid a bait out while my dad used my lighter setup for scratching. He got one nice size  sandshark and we gave up on the beach by about 09:30. If we stayed for the high I am sure my slide bait would have been picked up but we were both bored so we drove along the coast looking for a nice spot. Outside the bay the water was mud colour with huge swells. Never seen such a contrast. Eventually we found a place which I can only describe as a lagoon about 200m from the road and 1km from Suiderstrand. Maybe someone knows what its called? While we were walking around deciding whether to fish there an oke who had waded out to some rocks pulled out a small cob. When I went over to talk to him he got another one and another bite. That made the decision for us. Waded out barefoot and fieshed off the sharpest rocks in the world while being knocked off balance the whole time by waves. Result: 2 small cob and  6 missed including a really decent bite. Damn circles. Somehow the oke next to me could hook them even though I copied his rig and tried to fish the same way. 4/0 circle hook with 3 strips of tjokka hanging off. Maybe the fish didn't take my bait properly. My dad got one cob and dropped one on white mussel. Also saw a nice cape stump come out and a couple of guys got a few cob. One guy pulled out a cracker too.


Tide started going out and it went dead so went back to the harbour and fished off the island with light tackle in the hopes of picking up blacktail. I was using a 7ft 1/8 - 3/4oz dropshot rod with an old and abused shimano slade 2500 and 7 year old 8lb fireline when I got flattened. Saw a splash and thought it was a grunter but eventually landed a 5kg blue ray. We were going to fish die brood with Lenny and Konrad in the evening but neither I nor Konrad could find any liveys so we went home early. Considering the sea was far from ideal it really wasn't such a bad day.

Just to make everyone's day all fish were released even by the other guys catching the small cob. When last did you go fishing, find a shoal of undersized fish and not have even one guy killing?

Before sunrise Saterday Morning a 64 year old man died in the Harbour , from a Heart attack , condolences ! 


Earlier the week , we got some big Grunters , in the Harbour .
They are just so finicky , and well basically leave the braided line at home , as they will not eat when fishing wit braid ...
This i will prove over and over . You also need to fish AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE that includes swivels and sinkers .
For some or other reason , they will pick you up , and if your not on freespool , drop you again .
We mainly fished with fresh Pilchards , just cut of the head , and stick you long shank 1/0 in there .
We also had some success with Prawn , but they are hard to come by , and I am not driving far for them .
The smoothies was also very lastig and despite the conditions looking perfect for big Leervis and Kob , the smoothies are quick to eat your live baits ....


Rumour has it that the fish are bitting even harder in Arniston . Usuall suspects .


We have experienced , very strange things , in terms of the fish biting bloody hard for and hour , and then disappearing [kobs Grunters Elf ] we have also been getting Elf Kob and Grunters between each other ...


Elf has been slow , and late , one and twos .
A FRIENDLY WARNING TO THE BOLAND CLUB GUYS 'ordering Elf for bait '  10 at a time .
I am going to make an example of you , and you might just find all four your tyres of your bakkie  has gone flat .
And please don't leave your manners and common decency at home , I understand that you can't  be here a lot , and can't fish a lot , but its no excuse , to drive like a maniac , and endangering others . I feel the need to post this as it ALWAYS a CY or CA registration number . WTF is happening there behind the Boerie curtain ???


We got some good fish on the Alhards yesterday big Tail , it was a long day and the fact that a man died before we went out was , an eye opener just to be able to go out to sea and enjoy it and feel ' alive '. We also dropped a Snawelvis that snapped us off. The commies got between 5 to 8 bins per boat , mixed bag in terms of size , but some really really good ones too 12 to 17 kg fish AKA  ' bin strechers '
Expecting major fish run with in the next two weeks , everybody is on edge and just suuuuper amped .I for one have my   
Lunchbox and tackle bucket on standby . HKGK !!!




The TOMT is starting next week . Good luck !!!!
I will start a thread in the offshore section to keep you guys posted ! Some of the big boats have arrived , and I think the rest will come up with in the next two weeks . I have a bloody wedding to attend on the 21st and a bachelors on the 6th of feb but the rest of the time I will be here !

Bru , I can't understand these guys , but to be honest I don't want to , might be the brandy and coke induced coma they move around in over the weekends ... being a bit harsh form my side  , but it seems its the only way you have to 'manage ' these poorly mannered cavemen . Swak.

Mate, a 17kg Geelstert is a dream fish but I know there is a bigger one with your name on it.
It is a pity these guys are behaving like they do. I have seen similar situations before and it gives all league guys a bad name. In Stilbaai some would use a drag net at night to catch Mullet. Not on!

Today is the 25th of January.    The TOMT is from the 15th to the 21st of Feb. The boats will now start to arrive to scope out the action.

Just got home from Struis with the family...... a wonderful relaxing weekend

jis Lenny.....spent more time lookkng for that elusive grunters....but alas....next time ....when I got there friday  eve...did some recce on wall and when I came back this youngster sitting on edge drenched, went diving after a 5kg estimate..says its the largest one hes ever caught....but lost it after hooks pulled

Left the harbour wall at 3am on saturday morning ..ao might have greeted the gentleman who passed away....condolences to hia family....

well...only got two cape stumps for the weekend whick was safely released .....and a gorrie.....like I said ....spend time with kids

but I will be back soon to tackle the kob before they disappear

got Schooled , by a Grunter , a very large one at that .


I can hardly , get my bait out without snapping my 5 lbs line . and the 1000 sized reel does not really help the situation .


Picked me up , thought it was a Black pyl , but he was too quike and not the 'dead weight '  an he knew he was hooked , something the pylies don't do when fishing so light .


I re baited another rod , but nada .


about 40 commies out today . HKGK its about time those tons of tail start to vreet !

Good morning Gents, Its been ages since I posted something.


First of all, congrats Reefer, its amazing what you have accomplished with this forum!!!!!!


Secondly, Thanks a lot Lenny for all the Struisbaai updates, I enjoy them immensely.


I am going to Struisbaai the last two weeks of February, and would like to ask Lenny a couple of questions (or anyone else for that matter)


1) Could you guys please educate a layman on the best/easiest way of obtaining live bait?
I assume harder makes the best livebait.


2) sometimes you catch one sandshark after the other, is there a way of avoiding them, because they pick up the bait before the kob can get to it?




3) I see you guys refer to the B-board? where is this?
I know where Argonauta is, and the wooden walksway that takes you form the houses to the beach.


4) Has anyone ever tried using a sandshark for Raggie bait in this area? Is it worthwhile trying?

I will go into a bit more detail a bit later , busy busy .


Mullet are the best , to net them are the easiest and and quick . best to look for them , with a bit of lokkies / chum made from pilchards .
 for responsible reasons , i will not post were to get them , as the lurkers and scum of the earth , miss use this info on here , and don't put in any contribution to the forum .
But give me a call when you are in town , I will show you .


Sandies are a problem when your fishing the wrong wind , or your not fishing in a hole/gulley or deep area . unfortunately , sometimes they are all over , and there no real way 'around them ' except  Livebait . you need a couple of days of a gale SE wind and then a bit of NW or SW ...
And don't slide your livies , cast them .
They made good baits , the gills and stomach . and the 'big secret' in CPT are when theres sandies theres Bronzies . The Raggies will eat them too .
 
However ,you can't beat fresh mackerel here , and you're in luck as theres plenty of MAckrell being caught but the Comms , cheap cheap too , big ones .




OFFSHORE !!!! well not offshore , 5 mile the BIG BIG TAIL are coming up shallower , big big fish 13 to 17 kg fish , not as many as yesterday , but bigger fish and higher up the water column . WA my Site .

However ,you can't beat fresh mackerel here , and you're in luck as theres plenty of MAckrell being caught but the Comms , cheap cheap too , big ones .

Man, now I am hungry for a Mackie in the smoker.
