Thanks. I didn't get your PM but I noticed I had a Pm with your number from March. I assume it hasn't changed. Thanks for the offer of a wire. If I need worms I will give you a call. Otherwise feel free to join us. We will most probably throw bait and spoons/paddle tails. Hopefully something pics us up.

I went to struisbaai yesterday with a friend. We arrived at around 06:00 and the wind was pumping. Chucked light tackle at the harbour for an hour and then went in search of bloodworms unsuccessfully. I swear we ended up walking halfway to De Mond. Tide was very low and there were lots of anglers none of whom were catching. Just as the tide turned we saw a guy get a 3kg elf on a livie. Considering the elf I am used to fishing for are 30 - 45cm class in hermanus lagoon the site of an elf the size of an average yellowtail had quite an effect. By this time the wind had dropped and the clouds had disappeared. We pretty much ran back to the bakkie. On the way back we saw an oke with a 12ft rod and a big grinder getting his arse handed to him by a pylie. Got back to the bakkie without any bloodworms and went and bought food and some more topshot for my reel. We then tried to find a road to the beach as far along as we could but without a 4x4 I fear it would mean parking in the informal settlement and considering we would be leaving some expensive spinning gear in the back we decided against it. Instead we parked as kinda where all the estates are. As we got down to the beach the guy fishing next to where we were setting up landed a +-4kg Kob on bloodworm. Apparently the guy next to him caught two steenies before that on bloodworm. THis was at about 11;30. Hight tide was sometime after 14:00. Anyway we spent way too long setting up. By the time I got my first bait into the water they had stopped getting bites. I set up a sliding trace with a 3/0 hook and made a big prawn bait. First cast I got a belman of around 50cm (my first fish off a beach, first ever belman etc). Next cast missed something third cast got a nice blacktail. After that some small fish cleaned off my bait and the tide was pretty much full high so I changed to a 6/0 and made a very pretty pilchard bait. First cast got a hound shark. Second cast got something that had a different bite to the hound but felt quite similar. Anyway I got it into the shorebreak and saw a splash and then it bit off my hook. Considering my hook line was 0.7mm I don't rate it was a small hound. It looked as though my line had been filed through. Any ideas?It wasnt big as in it was probably around 80cm. By this time a wave had come right up the beach and washed away all the pawns and bait board so we could only fish pilchard. I then put on another 6/0 and added a 20cm piece of 70lb braided wire. Next cast hooked another hound or whatever bit me off. Once again got it right to the shore. Saw some splashing and then the water sucked out and the hook pulled. I suspect I have a hell of a lot to learn about fighting fish. After that the tide had turned and the fish turned off entirely on pilchards. I would have put out prawns again but ya, rookie error had put an end to our prawns. Although we didn't land lots of fish we got bites almost every cast. Apart from one morning catching hounds and blue rays on the Hermanus plaat, getting a bite while surf fishing is a foreign concept to me. That in itself made it a very successful and pleasant day. As for the guy with the 12 ft rod and pylie you saw I think it was Darren Kurz. He posted a pic with the Black Ray on FB

Water was very murky. High and incoming tide it was like a lightish green sandy colour. Outgoing and low it was sandy brown. I didnt measure water temp but it was warm. My guess is 16 - 18. Lenny might have a better idea.

Thanks for the report, David.

One thing about fishing off the beach is that you have to time pulling in the fish with the waves. If the water pulls back don't try and hold the fish but let it go back and pull it in with the next wave. Most fish are lost in the shorebreak due to hooks pulling because the angler tries to hold the fish when the water pulls back.
Well done on the fish landed, a Belman of 50cm is a good catch.

@David, thanks for the report and well done with the Bellman.
Fully agree with SAfish, you got to use the water to bring your fish out. If the fish is quite heavy and you drag it on the sand, there is already a huge strain on the hook, add to that, the water trying to drag the fish back in....

Nice report david.

things hotting up in struis it seems. This is why I love the area...elf, steenbras, kob, belman and blacktail...same stretch of beach. Add in the inedibles and its crazy. Glad you got some action! Pity about the prawns but solid belman!

Guys so I can put up a lengthy report , but to get to the nitty gritty . the season is heating up , at this stage , in the bay would be the best bet , the water is warmer and has more colour , but the sea salad and loads of it ...

From Skulpies baai to Brandfontein , theres lots of Kelp , with only die Brood / spookdraai a patch of really good colour , but he Kelp and salad can hassle you on certain times of the tide . It seems that on the drop theres gaps to make a cast .

Going on Weather reports and forecasts , the Skins will have IDEAL weather .

If anyone are in two minds about the weekend that comp is happening , consider coming and fishing.

BLoody westerly is here again today / water flat and clear .

I might take a recce to Pearly beach later today , and De kelders plaat .

Betty01 phoned me yesterday , were keen on doing a weekend in NOV , so should other guys be interested to pull in and maybe do a over night , stiek uit!

I have some contacts for accommodation , will still get the details .

Got a big pull yesterday on a PD , and landed a small Baardman of 34 cm , fish was in prestine condision , FAT . but like we know still shy from a Keeper. and was safely released .

The weekend is going to be ON to .

Went out today again , Water Temp dropped . Still some areas with really nice colour .

Plenty of Redbait , and plenty of swell , smaller than yesterday but still pretty strong and big .

I managed to get a few very very sneaky enquiries , they come in with the bait , most probably Baardman feeding shy because of the Trace and hook .
Switched to my Baardman trace , got nada . out of frustration I took a few castes with the PD , hey , I like fishing with the 8 lbs outfit and 2500 reel when conditions allow .

Got one pull that tore my PD off , Was fast a sleep , and missed it .

This water temp might hamper fishing efforts the weekend , And I am looking for a couple of guys to make a overnight , should the Salad wash up .

its a fantastic day here , no wind , and this might pull the ocean flatter ....

One boat ran to 12 mile came back very early , got NADA , also water temp down to 13 out there .

Who's pulling in for the comp?
