Awesome 1st post

and great catch

Were you seeing the fish busting or just blind casting?

Tomatoe Sauce · « **Reply #26 on:** September 09, 2013, 10:46:30 AM »

I didn't catch the fish. From what i understand they were chasing half-beaks. Initially he thought they were garrick being so close but after hookup it came to the surface and splashed a bit before taking off 300m out to sea.

Wow awesome Vid! Some outstanding skills to land that gas bottle!

Thanks for posting TomSauce. Any idea of what terminal setup he was using - braid, leader length and knots?

Lucky guy, looks like the YFT got hooked on its pelvic fin.
In fishing you make your own luck.
Well done on a great catch.

idiot... hooked square in the mouth.

That's a bit loose for a 3rd or 4th post. I must admit I also thought it looked hooked below the mouth near its throat latc, unless it had 2 hooks and the 1 in mouth and 1 there. Its not taking anything away from a very special fish, that will take a lot of beating. Having caught a 25kg yellowfin hooked in the tip of its pectoral fin, I don't think not being hooked in the mouth would have made the fight any easier.

Fair Enough... I may be wrong about the hook setting. But it wasn't the anal fin. The fish wasn't jigged. But there is a good reason comments were disabled from the youtube vid. Every extraordinary fish is questioned but i think all areas were covered here.

REEFMAN · « **Reply #35 on:** September 10, 2013, 10:21:18 AM »

It's quite clear from the pics posted in #1 that the fish was hooked in the mouth...?

John F · « **Reply #36 on:** September 10, 2013, 10:24:48 AM »

Not sure I get the point being discussed here?! Who cares where the fish was hooked? Is there any law stating that fish must be hooked in the mouth?!

Fish was chasing halfbeaks - angler casts lure - fish is hooked - fish fights - fish is landed!!!!!! End of story!

Toppie · « **Reply #37 on:** September 10, 2013, 10:44:36 AM »

I also don't think it matters where the fish was hooked, good fight and good fish. It was targeted with a lure so nobody can suggest it was "jigged".

But now since my curiosity has been aroused, at the point where the fish is being hauled out the water and onto the beach, look from 2.57 minutes in the video, it does indeed seem the hook is set somewhere near the pectoral fins, while in the photo's where the angler poses with the catch the lure clearly and distinctly dangles from the fish's mouth.

It would be strange if the hook-set was removed from its original position and placed in the fish's mouth "for better photo appeal".

I saw that as well - surely moved for photo appeal?

Great fish, what an achievement from the beach! It does indeed look as though the fish was hooked below the chin and in the pelvic fin. It obviously had a go at the lure, missed and was hooked where it was hooked. If you look at the line rub marks on the side of the body, it shows at what angle the line went and where the lure was. None of this takes away from the catch at all, not in any way. In fact, if anything, it makes it even more of a spectacular catch on the tackle used. It is far harder to bring in a fish that is not hooked in the mouth, due to the extra drag of pulling it at an angle. I have heard of two YFT being landed from the shore this year on KZN South coast with live bait. This one is an amazing catch, having been made on artificial lure. Very well done to the angler, that is unquestionably a catch of a lifetime!
