hi John F and Tony....... exactly!

This is in the Mozambique Channel - North-western Madagascar! Long way from home for a "Pacific" species!

Will be interesting to see what comes up on this Caranx "chap" into the future?

Cheers - RB

Hi Marcos, the fish in your pic is a Caranx tille, very similar, but with the black opercular spot. We caught a number of them, but this one had us puzzled. I am not familiar with Caranx caninus, but the shape of this fish was slender and long, not shaped like the pics of C. caninus on fishbase...

here are a couple more pics of the fish. It has a smaller eye than the Caranx tille, no colour at all, just plain white, with eyes far forward and some prominent adipose tissue around the eyes.

Thanks Marcos, much appreciated. I have sent some pics to Dr Bruce Mann, for him to circulate amongst his colleagues. Hopefully someone will come up with a positive ID. Last time I sent him a pic of a fish which was identified by Bill Vaniz-Smith in the USA as a Herring Scad, which hadn't been recorded in our waters, but I caught one near 25 mile reef north of Bazaruto, so it could be interesting to see what comes up on this species!
