Quantum Triax 30 TRX30F Pre-Use Review & Unboxing
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:04:36 AM »
The Quantum Triax is a beautifully designed spinning reel that can be used in fresh or salt water. I really enjoy the modern design and colours of this grinder.

The Triax was made in 2010 and is fairly inexpensive because all the parts for this reel were manufactured in Japan and then built in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. The retail price in South Africa can vary between R180.00 and R250.00, one should not pay more than R300 for this reel. Everything seems in good order and very solid, and I am looking forward to seeing how this reel performs in the sea. If it does well this could arguably be the best "cheap" spinning reel available in South Africa.

The Quantum Triax comes in a 20 30 40 50 and 60 size, but the 30 size, which is the one I am reviewing, seems to have the best specs in the range.

The Quantum Triax 30 has:

Front adjustable drag
Aliminum Spool
Continuous Anti Reverse
Right/left hand retrieve
Gear ratio 5.2:1
7+1 ball bearings
Weighs 247 grams
145 meters/8lb

Special Features:

Super Strong Drag, really impressed with it.
Has a long stroke spool design that allows line to more easily flow from the spool during the cast. This design helps to increase cast accuracy and distance, and in turn provides less line twist.

R300 for a 7 bearing reel?!!? Unbelievable what they can make nowdays! Instead of servicing it, you can just buy a new one!  :shk

:tkx: for the Pics and stats, the reel sure does looks impressive. A thorough test later on will be great as looks can be deceiving. My dad always said  "goedkoop koop is duur koop".

I love my Quantum I bought 5-6 years back, can only remember that it's a 40 size. Paid R400 for it and it's still going strongish in the wifes hands now as it not as shiny any more! Landed plenty of shad, scad, bonnies and even a juvenile wahoo on it. Best fight was a tiger of 4,5kg and a bronze bream of 3 kg on 14 lb braid. The paint on mine lifted at some places on the handle because of the salt getting under it, I forgot to rinse it after 1 trip and left it in the bag for a month. Might need to get softness a new reel for December catching livebait for me.
Trouble is just fun you got caught having

IF I can remember correctly it was something like a optix or some thing like that. It's only got 4 or 5 bearing if I remember correctly. Will check for you tonight and post a photo.

Great post WK..

REALLY like the look of this one !
Will work a charm in Swartkops, Sundays and Gamtoos !
Did not think I would find a better budget grinder than my little Silstar HF series, also sports 5 bearings and has served superbly in both fresh and salt water applications. They also came in at R150 when launched a few years back but have seen a steady increase in both popularity and price. Possible that increase in popularity has had something to do with the increase in price.

How this Quantum handle braid? Is the one aspect have not tested on the Silstar HF..

Thanks for the great work here guy.

p.s. Just looking at the images again - is this some grease on the bailarm assembly or the finish of the reel. If the latter it may look like a Saltist when that powdercoat starts to bubble and hence not be really suited to saltwater applications or just require a lot of maintenance..

Nice post Abaddon thanks! Will give it a proper test to see what it does, got 10lb Viros braid I am going to load on it, hopefully it works fine, have read that a few guys in the USA have used this reel with braid and nothing bad happens.

Didnt even notice that, just checked and it is grease...
