Before a recent trip to the Maldives, I was forced by my insurance company to list all my tackle and replacement value... DON'T EVER DO IT!! Could put a kid through school with that!!

Hi I am Adam and it has been a long time since my last fall from the wagon. Unfortunately a good deal on a shimano aerocast came up. I was forced not to say no. It feels soooooooo good. Now to just go fishing again.

When a wave broke over the bow of the 45' cat we fished off at Premeiras and punched through the clears, soaking us and everything in the cabin, my beautiful little Panasonic TZ20 was washed off the table and took a 30 second swim... R.I.P. beloved camera.

I started looking for a replacement. I initially thought to go for a waterproof, but after quite a bit of research, found that a waterproof was hardly a replacement in terms of their very limited functionality, so I started looking round at the TZ20s' replacement. I settled on a TZ57, an intermediate point and shoot in the Lumix range. Pricing was upper R3k... Then browsing Gumtree (as I sometimes do

), I came across a TZ57 for R1700, including free delivery... brand new!... Seeming too good to be genuine, I took precautions, made contact with the seller and told him I'd collect in Polokwane (1.5 hours from me) when I was next there. He told me that was cool and he'd hold the camera for me.

A week or so later, I went to see a client in Polokwane and contacted the seller to say I'd collect and pay. All good. Lo and behold, Marinios (seller) greeted me at his gate, invited me in and showed me a box containing a brand new, all complete TZ57. We got chatting. I was keen to know that this was not stolen goods. He showed me his little business and explained where his stock all came from. Mostly he imports goods (watches and electronics) from the East and sells them by mail order. But he also gets stuff from liquidators and guys winding up businesses. The camera was one such stock item. As we chatted, I told him what had happened to my old camera and explained my dilemma about choosing a waterproof one vs a more functional camera. So he tells me that he'd seen a waterproof camera among the stock that was being sold off because of the closure. So he said he'd find out if it was still available.

A few days later, I got a mail saying there was a FujiXP70 and a Panasonic FT30. I did some research and found the Fuji was a very respectable little camera. I paid him his asking price of R1500 (for a R2.5k camera) and a few days later, it was delivered by courier.

So now I have the best of both worlds, for the price of one

Picked up 5 x brand new Berkley Airs ranging from 7' to 10'6", 1 x Penn Torque 9'8" power spin, 1 x Penn 13'6" power graph, 1 x squall 40 lever drag, 1 x TLD5, 1 x Spinfisher 6500, 1 x Battle II 3000 and an Abu revo SX40 - all for 4K!

Feeling rather pleased with my self!

Hey DU... I'd forgotten that you used a Gosa to tame that beast. 6k (or 4k in Daiwa) are a difficult size reel here in SA... Not much to choose from... I've had my feelers out for ages for a 2nd hand Stella or Saltiga but after a good bit of research and a lot of very +ve info, I settled on the Gosa. Now I need to hear the drag sing.
