That's a great article Mike. The race card, ah yes, the tried and tested method. Someone should tell that Munger guy that our government is pro affirmative action, that race is no longer an excuse, and that we live in a multiracial country where we can all visit the same public places. What it shows is that their only defence is the racism card and I know for a fact that our predominantly black government will laugh at his excuse. If that is his only defence to raping and plundering, then they must be on the ropes. Look at the article closer and what is he protesting about.....the ban on Grunter, Garrick etc. If he honetly gave a hoot about his 140yrs of tradition this ignorant clown would realise that the laws are there to protect the existance of his livelyhood. What a clown.

Gentlemen, been there done that. I sent letters and photos to the newspaper when we had the problem with the rubber duck and shad story. The letter, although abrieviated was published and no pictures,  but I did post them on Ultimate Angling.
DSBC has an agreement with the netters and allow them use of their tractor to launch and retreive their boat. Has always been and is still being allowed.
If you feel so strongly about reporting the matter and want to take photos, go ahead by all means, but I can assure you an ugly situation will develop between yopurselves,  and they will challenge you and confront you on the beach.
The guy to contact is Benedict Nene who is the Conservation Manager for Offshore and Commercial Compliance, at 031-2741176, cell 0825592860 and his e-mail neneb@kznwildlife.com. Tight lines and good fishing.

The Cape Town beach seiners i have to say do not massacre everything....

Recently i think in total they caught 16 bronzies in the nets in a day....  They were completely in their rights to keep the bronzies as stipulated bycatch, and make a decent killing out of selling the fins and carcasses, but released all.

Last year for about a month, there was a very unusual mass occurrance of undersized kob in false bay, and the trekkers actually stopped all activity until they were told that the shoals have moved off.

It was also witnessed recently that the owner of one of these "treks" smacked one of the trekkers over the head with a piece of wood for trying to hide an undersize fish in his clothing.

So they have done quite a bit to clean up their act in cape town.

Also remember that it's not a protected area, it is falsebay propers, and as many a local angler will attest it is on it's head more often than not, so not every day is a trekking day even if the fish are thick.

After that it's basic maths, catch effort vs catch returns.  What the trekkers trek in kob over a year pales in comparison to what 1 inshore trawler trawls out of Mosselbay.

In fact 3 commercial boats out of false bay handlining will get more kob in a month than these guys get in a year, not to mention one good day of tail where all the recreationals run out will be more than the trekkies get in a year... yet the odd occasion when they do get tail and pictures are taken the comments that follow would think they wiped out yellowtail long ago....

They've been trekking those spots in falsebay for decades.  They still havent wiped out the yellowtail.

It is a very broad swipe to say they wipe out everything, the few treks i've witnessed, all steenbras have been released.

Marthin, That is a great post, very happy to read that.

As I said when I posted about these guys, please correct any info that I may be incorrect on and you did so. Thank you. It's important the the facts are presented. Regarding the Steenbras, many years ago, they did massacre these fish and I think that there are strict laws in place regarding this fish nowadays and they would rather release these fish than risk their lic.

yes the steenbras have been very well looked after when i have been at a trek.

Yet now our fellow recreationals are taking the mickey..... recently near melkbos, the amount of steenies massacres would have sent most people running for the hills.... true figures are difficult to come by but a thread about it appeared on one of the R&S forums.  What the new regulations achieved on the falsebay and southern part of the west coast in about 5 years was destroyed in about 3 days.

Very informative read, if anyone has photos of the garrick caught we can have them prosecuted as they are not allowed to catch them

Good read

That Counsellor is on their payroll. Why else. And how foolish does he look when proof is presented an he calls the racism card. Just trust me when I tell you that no-one reading that thinks you are a racist, they see him for what he is.

The race card is always pulled when they are backed into a corner. No one wants to be labled racist and hence by saying that they expect you to back off and go away. Which from what i'm reading is exactly what you did.

Unless someone has physical evidence of the poaching in the form of video or photo's this is all hear say and nothing can be done. I am disgusted if it did happen, but until proven there is nothing we can do right now. At the end of the day the netters have a right to earn a living the legal way and they have just as much right to be there as the recreational anglers do. In fact I think its because of them that the club has managed to be in current position for so long. I stand under correction but I think the land that the netters or on is theirs, and therefore the club benefits from supporting them - if they sell off the club goes? We definitely need to keep an eye on each other, like with what happened to the charter poachers recently.

Every one has their place in the sun, but we must all play by the rules.

Oh, and yes we are all entitled to a living, an honest living. However, if this kind of activity (As Parasite has shown) is approved of, then how dare we appose Rhino poaching or whaling or the slaughter of Elephants.

Nooit Chigger my cuzi, all the land below the high water mark belongs to the state, or the people of SA, the land above the high water mark belongs to the Durban Metro leased to the clubs. The high water mark is at the beach boundry of the club front area. Don't want to hijack this thread but hence the fight between us and the city/developers on construction of Small Craft Harbour. Enough said. My humble aspologies to all.

I agree that all must have there place in the sun, what annoys me is that these guys destroy a resource - as with the white steenbras in False bay (I watched in the late 80's and early 90's) as people oppose this but it continued till collapse. You will not find a mature Steenbras on juicy reef anymore. They are STILL allowed to take one per man if the accidentally catch them, which is often and then there suddenly as many trekkers as fish!

They move to the next target species and call this Tradition. I am for the sustainable use of a resource but willfull destruction is just stupid.

What peevs me more is that I had hassels with inspectors because the 8year old son was on the boat without a permit (Underage) so despite the law I got him a permit. Next time they wanted to fine me because I had a permit for an underage person - they implied I am now trying to catch his quota illegally! We had two YFT on the boat.... when are these idiots going to be even handed?

Then when the trekkers pull in a pile off protected or illegal species and bury them in the sand for later collection, you can't find an inspector, cop or anyone! I have phoned the poaching helpline in the Southern Cape and they told me they know about the incident, but dont have a vehicle or busy with and investigation but of the half dozen time they have not once rocked up.

:unhap gggrrrrrr.... ok, I am just bumping up my blood pressure.
