No such thing as a dumb question.

I've never tried them on spoons, but there's no reason why it shouldn't work on any lure that is retrieved with a fast, constant action? You can't this method on Poppers/bloopers/chuggers, it will affect the action too much I reckon.

Important: You can't use Stinger Hooks on any wooden based lure (Poppers are generally made with wood). The Stingers only work on Teflon/metal based lures where the fishes teeth will bounce/slip off the lure and (hopefully) onto the Stinger trailing behind.

Chisel noses track really straight along the water surface at a fairly high speed more often than not they'll be hit from behind as the fish pursues the lure due to the lures speed. the trailing hook helps convert a miss to hit.

Gotta say I disagreee with your statement above though mate.... I've used Assists on a wide range of lures including wooden stickbaits and poppers with great success.... As well as plastuic moulded baits... I think its a superb way to rig alot of lures, especially when working them fast....
 
But also had great success on slow moving chuggers, especially with species that engulf a lure like Grouper and GT's as that free swinging Assist often finds very solid purchase in the corner of the mouth....
 
This is an incredibly versatile way of rigging lures, and can be done very quickly as well with a few pre made assists with Kevlar that you can loop onto the rings of just about any lure....

I suppose it depends on the quality of the lure Nepps. If the wooden lure has enough solid glazing on it, then it will behave like Teflon and slip. But some of the cheaper lures have only 1 or 2 layers of coating - the teeth will bite straight through the glazing and imbed in the Popper, never engaging the Stinger.
So sure, if you're confident the fish won't bite through the glazing, then this method will work well.

I am not sure that a circle hook would be such a good idea on a plug. A circle hook needs to be tentioned so it can move to the corner of the mouth. If a fish is going to bite a plug and feel it is not a bait fish it will reject it quickly. I doubt you will have time to set the circle hooks. Circle hooks work awesome on baits that give the fish time to ingest the bait.

I've never used circles on lures before, but the current thinking is that they don't work on a fast moving lure. For a circle to work, one must wait for the bait to be swallowed whole, then the tension on the line will cause the bait to come out the fishes mouth, hooking the circle in the scissors of the fish's mouth. The take on a moving lure is usually fast and aggressive, allowing the J-hook to penetrate almost immediately.

Assist hooks tied to front of spoons also work, especially for those looking for max distance. It reduces the hook throws you get when the fish shake their heads. Their is reduced leverage as compared to the fixed hook, where the weight of the spoon/lure is closer to the mouth.
