Howsit Jan,

Welcome to Ultimate.

Like Fishatic said, in the competitive angling world, you tend to fish faster because there is no down time with overwinds and such. Plus it is slightly easier to cast a big bait with a grinder so this make fishing faster and easier.

Aside from that, grinders have evolved and are very high tech these days compared to the grinders of say the early to mid 2000's when multiplier's were still the number one choice. There are a lot of features on grinders that trump the multiplier e.g.: stronger drags, larger line capacities, ease of casting as even a novice can fish these with relative ease etc etc.

On the subject of purpose built rods, you are correct. A rod has to be built for a grinder reel for you to be able to use that rod and reel combo. You wont be able to chuck a grinder onto multiplier rod. It just wont work as well as a properly built grinder rod. Its a long conversation in respect of why.

Braided lines have become more popular in accordance with the grinder reel's popularity but it has various other benefits. No stretch, lighter, thinner diameter than equivalent mono. You can pack more line of greater breaking strength on your reel. braided lines are not only for grinders. Like Fishatic alluded to, some of us here use it on multipliers straight on.

What I mean is a lot of people use it as backing but some crazy people here use braid straight on as a mainline. Our reels are off course modified accordingly but that's another long story.

Enjoy your stay and shout if you need to ask anything else..:)

Thanks Kes, is it a realistic option to have a rod built? Where could I find someone who is good at building rods for grinders? I am able to get blanks used for the Purglass Executive rods?

Thanks

Jan

A custom built rod is the business bud. I modify all my rods when I'm not building from scratch, some even rebuild/modified straight off the shelf.

The guy that builds all my rods is my recommendation. He is very good but he is a bit of a tosser.. :)

His name is Brandon but goes by Fishatic on this forum. He has replied on this topic. Give him a shout and he will sort you out.

Thanks, I have sent Fishatic a PM.

Not sure that a PM will get to him (unless the site has changed) but if you don't get hold of him here, I'm sure he will get back to you with contact details shortly.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

To add, casting lighter baits and lures is easier with a grinder, such as when using a bung float for shad

I was once bait fishing off the rocks with my 12ft grinder rod with a 5 oz tip and 6500 size grinder and saw a school of shad smash bait fish infront of me. I didn't have a dedicated spinning rod with me, but I had a couple of 1 oz spoons with me, so I quickly put a spoon on and threw for those shad. The rod and reel were not ideal for the spoons but I could throw far enough to get into the school and before long I had two bus shad at my feet. I wouldn't have been able to do that with a multiplier, I would've gotten an overwind in short order because of the lighter weight spoons. Grinders give you more options. They are more versatile in my mind

In terms of servicing, some people say they are more complicated than multipliers, but really it's more of a different approach to how you go about taking a grinder apart to service it, not necessarily more difficult. It's just a different learning curve if you are used to multipliers

In respect of the bold bit, you are 100% correct. You have to be a very astute multiplier user to cast a lure with it eg: the legends of Rooikrantz. Those guys always used multipliers to spin. Even the guys there today still use multipliers.

It takes a lot of practise to spin with an ordinary off-the-shelf multiplier but it can be done. But some of us here use technology so enter magnetic cast control and now your spoon can fly miles sometime even further than the guys with grinders.  :hnthnt:

I would also strongly suggest you get a bionic finger (because I always tend to forget my casting glove at home  duh )

They are like R100 and you can use cable ties to fix it to your rod.

The other thing braid likes cutting other than mono is fingers  :hyst:

OK, I tried with a 14’ Assassin Bluefish rod with bionic finger, Daiwa 4500 and 25lbs braid. My performance was poor...., first cast lost the 5oz sinker to the sea and subsequent casts with 4oz sinker barely took my white muscle bait into the surf! all I managed to catch were two pieces of plastic.... and no, I did not catch and release! I clearly have much to learn with this method of casting? How does one select the grinder reel size, with matching rod, line, sinker for rock and surf for edibles?

For edibles you are looking at a rod that has a casting weight of at least 6oz. In theory, this will allow you to use a 5oz sinker max and leave you 1oz for bait. I say in theory because most rods these days can cast more than their rated spec. But all in all a 6oz rod should do fine for edibles.

On a 6oz rod you should be looking at a 4500-5000 size reel (Daiwa size) or a 5000-6500 size Penn. 300m of 30lb braid and some backing should be sufficient for these reels.

The 14' Bluefish is rated to max 4oz and bait.
What 4500 Daiwa have you got? BG?
1. Use a 4oz sinker.
2. Have you got a heavy-ish braid casting leader set up?4oz will pop 25lb braid pretty easily. I would suggest 60-80lb braid for the leader; ask the shop you purchased from to set it up and show you what to do to tie on a new one.

I recently moved from multiplier to grinder and bought a bluefish 14ft, BG5000 with 35lb JDB 0.18mm. 80lb JDB leader
Really loving it for eds. After a good amount off casting practice with the bionic finger,
I cast much further than on my heavy multiplier gear.

Using Braid on a multiplier.
« Reply #28 on: September 16, 2020, 09:26:02 PM »
Having read the pro's and cons of  :cg: vs :mp:  I would like to ask a few questions. All of my angling experience  over years have been with
:mp:  and only occasionally have I used  :cg: reels to catch live bait or squid. I fished competitively for many years as well and even when comparing the differences and opinions of many anglers I will most probably not change over to grinders. Iv'e spent to much money on equipment over the years and now these days i only concentrate on edibles and only compete on a social standing. I have read and seen fellow anglers fishing braid straight up on a multiplier. Obviously an expensive option since i suppose backing would be cheaper. I am correct with this assumption?  I am considering using braid on one of my small Daiwa 30 reels. These little reels cast a mile and the reason I would want to do this is to be able to fish in holes between the kelp. Braid cuts trough kelp and you are able to retrieve a fish and your tackle should you get stuck specially when fishing for Galjoen and Hotties. On the other hand the Braid will help to get the distance on those windy days with a long cast. I fish a purglas 400/2 with a Daiwa 30. What backing and braid should I use? Are there any changes to rod and reel that I need to make. On the rod most probably the guides? Any advise on braid, backing, leaders etc would really be helpfull.

Thank you all for such informative posts. Keep up the good work.

if you can find it, the "old" Fireline in 30lb is very good for this.

Actual dia is around 0.37mm, breaks at around 70lb (some say higher...)

Easy to unpick when you do make a mistake as it is slightly stiff / has a bit of body.

Casts well.

If I recall correctly I magged a Saltist 30 for Mike Pike and specifically filled it with 30lb Fireline, takes a 300yd spool + a bit of mono underneath to grab the spool

You could use Sufix 832 in 40lb .37-ish mm 65lb BS

So sad that Fireline is no longer made... It was my out and out "go to" for many years.

Kent,

Please throw a 1 or 1.5oz plug on your 40 size multiplier filled with 0.50mm mono. Whilst it is technically possible it is not fun.

Before you think I am advocating fixed spool over a multiplier, I am not:

1. A small multiplier say 20 or 30 size is heaps of fun with lures and bait
2. Most anglers could scale back the size of their tackle and have more fun, do you really need a 40 size to catch a kob? Really?

Well . The area you fish in , kleimond .

Any 10 ft stick , with either  a grinder or small multiplier , will be the best option in that specific area .

Amongst a few buddies , on die plaat , we have not yet gone the grinder route on heavier tackle .

One of the main reasons , we will end up , servicing grinders a lot , keep in mind we might fish 5 sessions a week in season ...

I would say , maintance on your grinders are advanced , multipliers you can service them easily .

Comparing , what you get for your money. A multiplier will be cheaper .

I fish with many smaller grinders , from 6000 size to 2500 , Stradics and are suburb reels for spinning and lighter situations .

I can ad some many  things still .

Ok ok, its a heap of fun to debate merits of multiplier vs fixed spool set ups, but who said I was using a 30 size grinder and 4kg braid?
These are some of my multipliers that get used for plugs, spoons, bucktails, scratching and even thowing kob baits....

Some are filled with 40-50lb braid, others with 9-11kg mono. The little bitty baitcaster without a levelwind will be filled with 15lb Nanofil for fishing, it has .25mm mono on it now for vergooi of 18g plastic sinkers to about 100m.
