Title: Why is this trout so yellow?
Post by: WalkersKiller on August 02, 2011, 04:24:38 PM
Hi guys was just thinking is this cock (That was in full spawn) possibly a golden trout? Millstream dont stock golden trout on purpose but occasionally some do get into the dams... What do you guys think? If this is a Golden Trout is my first  :-)

Nope, that's not a golden.  You will know it when you see it.

Gareth the male trout usually change colour during the spawning season, and the colour can vary a lot, some go really dark brown and in others the red colour also darkens a lot.

WK - don't know why that fish is so yellow, but I doubt it's a golden trout; we could see the following changes in our brood stock when they were ready to milk - the hens went much darker and the cock fish developed a bright red patch on the cheek. I am almost 100% sure your fish is a hen - the cocks lower jaw ends in a pronounced hook.
