Yes its a terrible business indeed. I'll be down at the wild coast for the weekends of the 25th and the 3rd. The next 2 weekends coming up now are also out due to prior arrangements. Sorry chasps, i won't be able to make this one!

I will however watch the thread and once we have established numbers will start throwing a venue or 2 into the pot. w;k
The one request was chalets, that puts Oord Nebo top of the list. Plenty of water and very family friendly/ Pool and playground for the kids, plus the last time we did a Flytalk trip there ( weekend trip ), they organised the Boma with braai fires and big screen TV for the Saterday night. :happ: :happ:

Kumz i have a spare rod and reel, virtually brand new, 5/6 weight, will be perfect, i also bought a ton of flies for our trip gone by which i wouldn't be able to use in my life time, so you sorted then

No Problemo. I'm not the Ultimate Vaal angler, rather a fisherman who likes to f/f , and the years have given me a little bit of savvy.
I will take anyone, even a brand new fisherman, if you don't like the way I fish, it's simple, don't ask me again. :crzy :crzy

Oord Nebo is an excellent choice. Its easy to wade and the fish there are big.
Another option is Raaswater that is just above Oord Nebo. Was there last year the weekend after we all had the social at Nebo.
I got smoked by big fish. I had fish break a 15lb leader running upstream.
Hooked into a big fish I played for about 20 minutes only to be broken off on a submerged tree. I even had fish bend the hooks open here. So, I am due for a rematch.
The wading here is also easy going, plus they do the extra effort in taking you to Scandanavia Drift bridge and dropping you off there for a drift downstream in your Crockie or Ark.
If its the 16th, I might be in for this one w;k

Okay I tell you what, I will look into this Thai Curry Fly you are suggesting and I will tie you a handful and give them to you on our next outing.
However, I would pay a large sum of money to see the look on your face when you hook into a Mumbai Radioactive Carp or Barbel on the Vaal. Both these are guaranteed to not only run you into the backing but you will feel the sharp pain similar to a paper cut once the line burns through your finger and the added effect of knuckles busting on that knob of your fly reel as you are trying to slow that creature down on that 15lb leader.
You my friend will look like a cross between Paul Adams and a bartender pouring Bloody Mary's, and I will be there with the camera, hitting a PRICELESS moment for the scrapbook. :hyst:

If you do not want to go to Oord Nebo, what about Vaal Hackle, Ben Joh, Hakuna or even Schoemansdrift?

Depends on the amount of people already there on the day. I have fished it as a day visitor and as a weekend guest. But booking that place for a weekend would be awesome. The wading is a bit tough though. But the fishing is good.

Instead of adding rope to my wading stick, i'll clip my harnness onto that bag, that way if your waders fill up with water and you get washed down stream at least i'll be able to save the bag :crzy

The worst? Top venue at bandit country without a wading staff? Strydom's can be pretty bad too, especially in the middle of a thunder storm , broken wading sticks and all w;k. :hehe: I hear that commando neck is pretty bad too.

I slip and slided over rocks in waist deep water. But I kept my balance. But I have fallen over the smallest of rocks at a different venue. The thing is you put your foot down and you slip over a rock and thats how you normally loose your balance and swim.

For me #1 worst venue is the "new spot" in bandit country. :shk Those boulders are sharp, scattered, and just plain nasty. :unhap Couple that with the flows of 18 - 20 tons , all going through that channel, wading there is a nightmare :unhap :unhap :unhap

Kommando Nek is not bad at all. Fished it last year without a wading stick. Cause mine broke as I was bundu bashing over one of the islands. Shortened it to about 30cm, sure aint a wading stick after that, more like a poker if you ask me. duh

I'm available beginning April, i can fish first 3 weekends in April, so i m keen to join anyone that will be going, i think the 16th is already confirmed but i can fish the 2 weekends before that as well

Eastco is a lekker place accom wise and huge water expanse, although you already made a trip out there.

Hi and welcome Michael :welc: . The Sterkies comment was more tounge in cheek. While I am more than happy to do a Sterkies day trip, I don't know how many of the other guys would be up for driving 3 hours each way for day's fishing. There are loads of places on the Vaal with accommodation, Vaal Streams, YFP and Smilin Thru are just a few of them.

Yeah, I am familiar with a couple of them but not which which is the best inyerms of organising a full outing like you did for Oord Nebo! Good job there BTW!
Trust me, I would so be in the car with you to sterkies often but I would prob fish myself single with the way I am going now. I am having to spoil the lady with a weekend away this weekend.

Vaal Hackle is a very good venue if you book in advance. That would probably be my first choice, with Oord Nebo as my second choice. It's a pity that I probably wont make the next Vaal Trip with my Lesotho trip coming up next month.

Oord Nebo was great, really enjoyed it, but still need to explore more closer to home.

Michael, go into any fishing shop and buy the Makatoerie ( sp?) booklet that lists all the public venues on the Vaal from the Dam to Potch.( Remember to get the Vaal River one, and not the Vaal Dam one.)
It gives info on each venue as well as contact numbers.
A great little refernce book at a very reasonable price.

Most of the f/f head off to the troot waters from end April to September.
Maybe an Ultimate trip to Big Van's place in winter for trout, then revert back to the Vaal in September?,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Just an idea. w;k

The August LM trip will drain the resources a lot, especially in terms of leave.
But hey, once a year a 3 or 5 day solid fishing trip is mandatory. :yipee: :yipee:
