Hey ho hey ho! and off to to the Berg I go! A week of staying at Castleburn and fishing fishing fishing - I hope the rivers are running fine - otherwise its the Castlebrn dams for me and select UHTFC waters - I have some rivers in mind and a couple of trophy dams as fall back if the rivers are bad.
Sorry about you guys that are staying home and working - but life is like that....and I hope to see that my vegetable garden has grown by the time I get back.

You enjoy it Comrade
Give us your full report with some great pix of Huge Trout
Take care where ever you go in the wild.

Good luck Ziggy :tite hope you get a massive Rainbow or two :sml:
-
Lets hope the weather is good and the trout are hungry - and I always take pics - and release....but not always carry a camera on the river...too heavy and risky
-
Nice Ziggy! Tight lines! fshg

Drive safe and enjoy!! :happ: :happ:

Thanks Big Van - but please (seeing that pic of yours on the jetski) never ask me to use my float tube!

If only I could fit into that! Caught 23 (biggest about 12") trout (biggest about 12")this morning a few steps away from the lodge that I am staying in. Such tame fishing! tiny stocked ponds - caught all on a 2wt with dry flies -got bored and went back. Need to get some real water. Thiese "put and take" tiny lakes is what Guatengers think is torut fishing (sorry guys - but I have been to one or two of those dams up there!)
Tomorrow I venture out into club waters

Aaaaaaaaaaaaa ok my friend - I found your report - but the small stocked dams just got you going.
Go get those loners now in the bigger lakes.
Good luck and looing out for your next report.
Enjoy & Enjoy

I fished the big dam today and caught three fish - two cock fish weighing 2,1 kg, 2,3 kg and a 2.5 Kg hen - all released. A lucky day - my partner hit a blank

Very good then = I wish you luck for today - Monday.

When will you be back home??

Come visit me at Leeuwkloof if you want to catch quality fish. This weekend a friend of mine bettered all his previous pb's. Brown of 3.2 kg a golden of 1.8 kg and rainbow of 3.8 kg. Come check it out you will never regret. We do not stock fish of less than 1 kg.
Enjoy
-
Great stuff Ziggy! (clap)
-
Cold front hit last night - went out for 3 hours this morning---three takes but not hooked - brought one of about 2kg to the net....got cold and came back to the fireplace - going out now again for an hour - its 4.30. Hope to catch something! Yesterday was too lucky I think!

The final report
I got back on Saturday - and the tally of fish caught after 6 days of fishing was as follows:
- In the small put and take dams - caught and released about 70 fish between 8 and 12 inches. I fished these dams (outside my front door)when I got up in the morning, when I walked back from the big dam and then when ever I was bored. I fished mainly a dry fly on a 2 wt - real fun, and it honed my accuracy casting. Took two for the pan - and when I gutted the one I found a plastic lure and a fly in its belly - see the picture....now who would want to try and catch such small fish with such a big (illegal for trout) lure?
- In the big dam I caught a total of 6 fish between 1,8 and 3kg. The fish were really healthy and strong - the 3 kg one took me into my backing - never had that happen in a dam before. I lost a number of fish as well - (fishing with a barbless hook). Most were caught on an olive beadhead wooly bugger - other flies just did not attract the fish. I fished the dam about 2-3 hours a day (from a boat). Only one picture to show (see below) - the wife wanted the camera to take pictures of birds and stuff and said that I have enough pictures of fish!
Unfortunately, the rivers were really low and not flowing - even the protea junior trails being fished on the rivers last week did not manage to catch anything significant
I cant wait for the rains and the subsequent settling of the rivers - then I will go back
-
Great stuff - I am very happy you had a relaxed good time in the Berg.
How did you find your Veggie garden at home when you got back??
All growing fine??

interesting that the trout took the dropshot though...get's one thinking

At Drakensburg Gardens, I caught a 600g ?? trout on Berkley camo worm !
-
Sorry,
Great stuff Ziggy !!!!!
-
Homie - not good ethics to catch trout other than on a fly! However - I do understand that camo worm is deadly for trout. I have a friend who did a "scientific" experiment with the camo worm and found that it was a very effective lure - not that it imitates anything specific - its more the gulp juice I think. And we know that REAL trout fishermen dont use plastic lures, juice or any other thing than a fly. The same friend has another favourite fly whcih he calls "Albany White" - basically white bread kneaded inot a dough ball.
-
Lol Ziggy, yup, I hear you !
Actually only had some dropshot and bass gear, didnt go to fish, as it was a mates bachelors. We were supposed to go to a dam stocked with bass for a day on our way back, but I couldnt resist when i saw the water !
-
Ja Homie! Heard that one before!

I feel that if the venue limit you to flyfishing then that is fine.
But really is a fly more ethical than an artificial work :-) I'm just stirring
-
ok, ok, ok, I lied !
Caught it on a treble baited with sardine ! Oh, and it was about 8.4358 KGs !
-
Also once did a scientific experiment with an "Albany White", just once I promise!
Can vouch that no trout can leave it alone.
-
I once did a scientific experiment with brown bread and honey on one of our dams on the farm....jeez trout are more after honey than pooh bear
-
Once upon a time I went to the berg to innocently catch a few trout with a fly - and then all hell broke loose - and all the poachers and bad boys who use illegal tackle began to expose themsleves in public!
-
Super catches Ziggy, thanks for the report! :ayb That soft plastic is almost as big as the fish! Unreal.
