HI Guys
Being from PE, I have been told that Cob is the easiest fish to catch on artificial, my count is currently on 1, and it deosent really count as he was like 20cm
I only fish with artificial, I am therefore requesting assistance on the best methods. To be told that the Drop Shot must be retrieved slow does not help much. Surely the Pro's out there have a specific system that they use to decide to change lures/depth etc.
Can anyone help me with this more "specific" information?
I was fishing on Sunday, which, in theory, should have been a successful day in PE - but I blanked. I have all the tools, so it is the operator. I just need to cross this last hurdle.
So if there are any coaches out there - Please coach :tkx:
-
Where did you fish? You have one of the best art lure fishing partners in the country. Speak to the Alcock brothers in Cape road. If you can get their dvd's. Loads to learn from them.
-
Thanks
but done all of that. I have all the Alcock's DVD's.
I am literally hoping to find someone that will show me how its done. I have nearly all the theory, I just need the final instruction.
-
I fish anywhere in PE
-
I like to fish places like Sundays, van Stadens and gamtoos. If you have the tackle and the know how to retrieve all the different lures. You will only need to get the right structure on the right tide. Eastern winds for sundays westerly wind for gamtoos and van stadens. I like to fish with a 2.5 to 3.5m swell. When fishing the surf you will have to do some mileage to get to the fish. Fishing the rivers you should stick to the mouths. Look for banks with nice steap drop offs. Sundays and Gamtoos river normally produce more cob than swartkops. Swartkops is more a leerie skipjack river, also lots of grunters. See if you can get hold of a guy called Flippie. He is more into the big rod rapala thing but maybe he can help you. He is one of the local guys.

I am no Pro , but was taught by the PE guys , and have caught a large number of Kob on Lures , ,ai;y the old Havocs , and lately the Clones and Paddletails , like I told another guy today , spoons work very well , but for some reason its just not my forte , I have seen friends getting fish on spoon under my nose and me NADA. I taken a couple of fish while the others are using spoons , I got them on PD tails .
1st thing , the swell must not be too big and the water not too turbulent , meaning fish when the conditions are right to fish with lures , or lets say more conducive to retrieve a lure .
If theres too much water moving around , and current , you will not be able to present you lure properly it WILL twist and roll , and no KOb will eat it EVER , believe it or not .
Accurate casting , and reading the water will be essensial too , you have to put your lure over areas where Kob ly and wait for a meal to pass.
Another way to put you lure in the strikezone for longer is to fish Parallel with the channels , on the edges , Kob patrol these edges when they are actively feeding , by putting you lure along the edge your chances are better to encounter a Kob .
Slow down your retrieve , 99% of guys fish too fast , for Kob , they are lazy buggers and will not go through too much effort to get a meal . The tendency I have seen a number of times , once you have your retrieve slowed down , and you start to get pulls , you will find that they smash a lure in many many diffent ways , but the skelm bite is a tap , tap , you have to stay in contact with your lure via your rod tip at all time otherwise the Kob will just spit it out again ,they tend to engulf a lure and spit it out VERY quickly if they chew it and feel hey this is not a Mullet ... before you can tighten up .
Then theres the plastic bag bite , it feels like you have a plastic bag hooked and just feels heavy , and if your lucky a headshake gives him a way . then you get the smash properly , like we all see on TV and your just VASSS without a doubt , and your drag goes for a couple of meters ...
Check you hooks every trip and during fishing trips , you will not believe how blunt the Sand can make you hooks blunt , this is also a issue that does not , get enough attention , don't ask me why . A SHARP HOOKS is a good hook .
If you throwin PD , bounce the jighead on the bottom , along as you stay in contact with the bottom every now and then , you can even pause your PD on the bottom for a few seconds , give it a twitch , and let it flutter back to the bottom [ i know the a dlocks are masters in fishing PD's flutter . it works for them and they have caught loaaadsss of job on lure , I have not been so successful with a flutter retrieve , but my retrieve is works for me , so why change it .
The first Kob on Lure are the hardest , try to go back to the spot you got the first one , unless its washed closed , and spend some time there . EC are a mecca for getting proper KOb on lure . GREEN with envy .
What plastics are you fishing size colour , jighead size ? Do you make use of a fluorocarbon leader , sometime they are finicky and the FC does the trick .

Great info there Lenny :+ cred:
-
I might go out on Saturday morning to van Stadens. Send me you number if you want to tag along.
-
Thanks for all the responses.
My equipment being used currently is the Following:
Dave Alcock Custom Rovex 9.2
Ryobi Arctica 4000
Maxima 30lb braid
I have 10, 20 & 30lb Flourocarbon.
I have the following bucktails:
White & Olive
White & Yellow
White & Pink
All 2 Ounce
Lures for Cob:
Clone - White
Clone - Blue & Purples
Both 2 Ounce
The rest are Dual Slims and other spoons
My biggest problem (I think) is the fact that I have never seen it done, and I am very new at trying to read the water.
Secondly - I have never fished at Sundays, Van Stadens and Gamtoos - So once again, the inexperience coming out.
But the info has been excellent - So please keep it coming

Email sent - Thanks for the invite

Ohh those adlock customs are nice .
Get yourself a pink clone
ASAP . If you are on fb , have a look at clone lures page . Those olive bucktails are also deadly in you part of town . Have a look at some of reef mans water reading threads .

:hnthnt: ..Heres a tip for you.....look at the pic attached....see the channel running just off the rocky ledges in front under the water...NOW...gooi into the white water over that channel....bring it trough at a nice pace ..not strolling ...a steady walk , if you get my drift , rod tip up , be aware . when you feel him on , dont stike , reel and lift and then hold....then keep pressure...too much he swims ...too little , he swims......this method is what i use with spoons ranging from 1.5oz to 3oz...Use a single short shank 6/0 to 8/0...AND.....If you dont like blanking....dont ONLY stick to useing spoons!!!!...GOOD LUCK!!!...One more thing...find you spot(s) ...work them....on all tides...make notes...and before long ...you will be getting those kobbies!!!
-
Thanks
I don't only use spoons - but i do use them more than paddletail or bucktail.

A mate of mine, on the site Gavin, caught some Kob on bucktail (White and olive) in feb, using the EXACT retrive the Alcocks do on their DVD's. It was in a deep hole found amongst some shallowish water. I think the key is to try to find the Kob.
A camo worm can be worked the same way after letting it drift for smaller Kob.
-
I think my biggest problem is identifying those holes. It looks easy when there is a still picture and lines on it. but when the water is moving, it is a different story.
Regarding making notes - mine is simple - Blank, 1 Leerie, Blank, Blank.
Not much to be excited about :cnfzd
-
You can identify holes quite easily in the surf... In the rivers its more difficult, the best way to do it is going over areas with a boat and a fish finder.
The way I do it though is cast a ball sinker (Just the sinker) into different areas, leave the bail arm of the reel open and if your line peels off more in one spot than another, you have found your hole!
Often in main channels in a river, there are holes close by or in the channel.
You probably shouldnt be taking my advice though, last time I caught a Kob on artificial was 2010 :hehe: :hehe:

Does anyone know hoe up to date Google earth is when using it?
Example: If I use Google Earth for an area when it is lowtide - will it help much?
-
If you have Google Earth downloaded, it will tell you when the photo was taken, either in the bottom of the screen, or in some versions, when you click or highlight an area.
The Eastern Cape in Google Earth varies from 2004 to 2013, but is mostly outdated by 5 to 6 years.

It really helps to get yourself something like an Excel spreadsheet or log book with various columns and write down as much detail as possible. Soon you will work out the pattern for a certain spot and then you can return when the conditions are similar and it will increase your chances. Do something like this:
Fishing Spot: Red Dunes
Date: 12 April 2014
High Tide: 8:00
Low Tide: 14:00
Time Started: 06:30
Time Ended : 10:20
Moon Phase: 2 days after full moon
Water temperature: 21,7
Sea Conditions: 2.5m waves with lots of foam
Wind: SE 12 knots
Barometer: 1020 and falling
Catches: Bronze Bream - 22cm - red bait- released;
Gully Shark - 50cm - chokka - released
Comments: Water was choppy with a pea-soup colour. Fish stopped biting as the wind got stronger later in the day. Two guys next to me got a couple of Kob.
Man, now that I had this dream I really feel the need to get out of the office!! :-( :hehe:

w;k ..You know what Bud....JUST GO FISH!!!!!

Does anyone know hoe up to date Google earth is when using it?
Example: If I use Google Earth for an area when it is lowtide - will it help much?
only thing that I want to add is that reefs and rocks wont move obviously,so there you can use Google earth, but sandbanks, gulleys, gutters etc.on sandy bottoms change all the time,so there G.earth won't help. The easiest way to notice deeper water is to check for water that's bluer/darker with foamy water either side(sandbank).Usually rolling white water is where sandbanks are because waves break there as it's shallower...
p.s:remember to use the cred. system,as Lenny and others gave you good information... :clwn

w;k ..You know what Bud....JUST GO FISH!!!!!
Best advice you'll ever get regarding fishing , just fish my bru . You guys are lucky up there to have plenty of job hungry for lures .
Theres no easy way , don't over think you plans , just get that lure in the water , on the right conditions , and keep at it , you might blank far another couple of outings , and then one day you will find a ' pattern' that will produce fish , and well then your sorted ! I can't recall how long it took me to get my first one , but i know it did not come easy , but once i fine tuned my tactics , there was plenty of Kob .
-
Bubbleboy go look in the forum under saltwater lure angling and read Tommo's article "cob on lure" I doubt if you will find any better. Short but packed with guidelines in my opinion. I still have to catch my first cob on artificial but I am going to go with this article on my first attempt.
-
slow and low
other than that, throw what you want.
-
Correction the article is called "spinning for cob"
-
Guys
Thanks for all the info
I will take all advice and give feedback. Maybe even take a pic or 2 of the area's I try.
And to all
:+ cred:
-
Orca & Charteuse Paddletails works for me at Swarties. I've even gotten a Cobbie on the "fake" Onde Onda on a medium to fast retrieve (was gooi'ing for leerie).
So far i haven't had much success with bucktails, still learning as well. But I'm sure I will get into it.
Don't get to fish as much as I would like to (so there lies MY problem)!
Tight Lines!
-
Hey m4kes
I am talking specifically for surf (probably should have mentioned that  )
I have caught a few minor leerie and cob on the artificial stuff - So I am looking for the bigger boys
My bucket list to catch is as follows (Most difficult at 1)
1. Yellowtail from the side
2. 20kg Cob from the side
3.10kg Leerie from the side
4. 10 kg Cob from the side
As you can see - I set high standards for myself :hehe:
-
I can relate to that bucket list.
As far as surf is concerned, so far only elf on double slim spoon.
Lost 2 plugs down Wells Estate side after some hard takes. Suspect it was leerie/garrick.
Lost a clone lure as well in the surf, still haven't figured that one out yet.
Also got a Spotted Gully Shark at The Pipe on Orca Paddletail.
But like you none on my list as yet.
-
The yellowtail you will get at st Francis point or even cape st Francis at the light house. For the cob I will fish Sundays or even vanneriets in a easterly wind. For the leeries I will hit the surf in a westerly on gamtoos.
-
Aaaai Pieta
You make it sound so easy :crzy
-

I can never remember the guys name , but YOH , we fished the point for tail , making tons of casts .
While this guy got his lunch box out , lite up a siggie and just sat there looking at the ocean , i never knew him then , and thought , this OH , is strange ... Then out of the blue , he puts in a cast , and low and behold VASSSS , first cast , we must have made 40 to 60 casts already with no joy . So we land his Tail , super stoked / duk viskoors because we are skimming , the fish are moving in closer . and what does this guy do , washes his hands , and goes and sit on the rocks again , after a while , again , same story , gets up , makes a cast , and VASSS . could not believe it , he told us that he could spot the fish and gave a long explanation ... but never worked for me ....
-
For the yellowtail you will have to be in the right place at the right time. The cob would be a bit easier. The are more predictable. Been a year since I have been to Sunday's but on my laast vissit to home there were afew very nice spots that you could fish on low tide close to the mouth. For high tide the better spots were about 45min to 70min walk up the beach. On vanneriets side just to the right of the mouth there was a nice spot to spin and slide. About 600 to 800m to the right there was a nice high tide spinning spot. You need to put in the time to see the spots on low tide to see where your structure lies. Gamtoos you can get the leeries any where from the pole where you get thrue the deuns to the mouth. The cob spots are a to the left and also a nice walk. Van stadens you can hit the surf to the right. There is plenty of spots and uselly plenty of duckbulls too. If you put in the time and effort you will need some one to take the picks.
-
Time at the water is the only thing that will help you in the long run with spinning. You will work it out quickly when you walk the beach and keep your eyes peeled. All the time's that I have been successful with Garrick I have been able to spot them in the waves. It is sometime the smallest disturbance the will give away their presence. I have not been successful with cob yet. I love the top water smash too much. Maybe end of June I will target them more frequently.
-
Of Course
Must put in the time. Luckily a friend of mine bought a setup today, so at least I have another partner option.

Anybody got an idea how to retrieve the above? I bought it because it looked pretty. :lolo:

At Bubbleboy.
For Cob I will slow my action down, very slow twist and jerk actions because Cob are bottom and very slow feeders.
Here's a small description about the lure's action. The Shiverstick 125 has a vibrating, shivering action when allowed to sink through
the water column & a strong side-to-side action when twitched and retrieved.
-
This is a place I fished Sunday - I felt that the water was too shallow. Please comment.
The 2nd pic is some of my lures
-
From that pic I can't see a gully, hole, sandbank or gutter whatever you want to call it,so for me the formation is featureless, try to look for water with at least 2 of the things mentioned,if there is a gutter there usually is a sandbank next to it,then place your lure on the drop-off of the sandbank or in the gutter(deeper water)itself, because this is where the Kob will patrol to ambush baitfish that gets washed off the sandbank...the water there seems a little dead too,not enough movement and white water(foamy water),you've got a good selection of lures there so no reason to not catch kob, you've just got to learn to spot the "right" water to target them in,they also like discoloured(gingerbeer or peasoup colour)water during the day as they are ambush predators...compare your picture to some of these... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=7396.0 (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=7396.0) and http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=7429.0 (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=7429.0) you will see the difference... :clwn I just noticed that you don't have a two-tone metal spoon...copper one side and silver other side or just plain copper... :hnthnt: let it bounce on sandy bottoms causing the sand to be disturbed... :Like:
-
This is one of my spots I fish. Pic was taken on the low tide. As you can see lots of structure.
-
The picture of poenskop looks alot like the setup at vanneriets. Your pick is taken abit glat but if I had to make the call on what I can see, you can walk right up to the drop at the back and further more the swell is to flat for my liking.
-
I was fishing for leervis that day. that pic was taken on the turn of the tide. I had alot of follows but they would not commit. They only started hitting the lure as the tide start pushing. This was one of them. It was caught on the drop at the back.

Anyone fished with Clone Lures?
According to their sales pitch - they are deadly for cob. I have 2, (white & blue/purple) 2oz.
How should I fish them?
-
With any lure, no matter if its a spoon, paddle tail or bucktail, when fishing for cob you need to get as close to the bottom as possible. For me the light blue, olive and white colours work the best. I know there is guys fishing purple and dark green and gold with plenty of success. The most guys problem with cob on lure is there retrieve. It is most of the time to fast. In golder water you can even let it ly on the bottomfor afew second and twitch it once or twice every now and then. Let it free faal when it come of the bank into the gully.
-
The pink clone are the best for kob , hands down . And elf love the green ones. With lipped lure like rapalas the mullet colour are the best , they are scarce though . But seriously get yourself a pink clone . The clone guys are just as compitant as the adlocks . Clones are cheap too. They also are from pe . I have been very successfull , with the redheads and the carrot ( orange rapalas) in Transkei the kob goes bossies for the carrot.

And if your old school , try to get a couple of Havocs they are lipped lures similar to Rapalas , get a couple of weighted Trebles , and your good to go ! Havocs also hail from PE , and are very popular or were before everyone was fishing lighter and with braid and PD's . The big lipped lure fish better on a Multiplier setup .
-
Thanks Lenny - But I will definitely only be using a Spinning reel.
If possible - Please post any pics of lure suggestions.
-
Any luck with kob yet bubble boy? Also aiming to catch my first kob on lure this season; I do most of my fishing at Beachview/Maitlands surf, but no luck yet! But I will keep on trying until I get the right recipe all talking about!
I can tick some Leeries off for now, after a moer a lot of spinning in the surf, all 4 successfully released!
So,like the champs are all telling us, I will spin of my arms off like I am doing now, to catch my kob on lure with light tackle!!
Weather looking crappy for this weekend though, waiting for strong westerly to come through and will hit the surf again.
Cheers

Nope
nothing as yet.
Tried several different spots. Van Stadens to Cape Receife - but nothing yet.
I want to try again on Sunday. but I am not sure what the gale force wind will do to the water that is blowing on Saturday.
-
Witch direction is the wind blowing now and what is forcasted for saterday. Wat is the water conditions at the moment?
-
Bubbleboy, that is a healthy collection of lures. We always fish with the quick release clips so we can change lures quickly. Alcocks sell those, they are really small clips and work really well. If we find that we are getting no action on a lure/s, we change and keep changing until something happens. Just an idea, if you are fishing the surf, look for other guys and maybe talk to them and see what they say. Some guys will offer you bad advice but some guys will tell you exactly what you are looking for on that spot where you are standing.
Don't get discouraged, the more you ask, the more you learn. Your bucketlist is very do-able!
-

Thanks Robin - I use the quick release clips.
I dont mind asking people - I just never find them in the same spots as me.
-
I promise you that if you talk to the Alcocks before you go out, your chances will increase. Call them a day before and tell them what you are targeting and I am certain they will give you any number of spots to try.
Just don't lose heart or become discouraged, enjoy your time out there and soon enough you will start to catch.

Today is no good IMO
Tomorrow the swell is too big .
I remember a few years ago , I was throwing Havocs for Kob with a couple of well known Anglers [ none of which will ever be online ] It was the days when ESA started way back . We parked in Jeffries at our spot got our rods of the bakkie tied on havocs , and saw the ESA brigade standing around ,they were giggling about our mission .back then it was strange to fish for Kob with lures , only a couple of EP guys has cracked it . One of the guys that fished with use lets just call him 'WB' was not keen on talking to them . Went we started to work the area with lures , soon WB went tight , next cast Tight again .
WB then said look at them now . We looked and they were still standing in the parking lot , but Wesley the youngster of the lot ,got out the Binoculars and watching WB's every move , I was amazed by why this guys are not fishing . long story short don't over think man . you live in Lurefishing heaven , just check your knots and hooks and GOOI .
I have said this , the first one is your hardest , and well after the first one you will get into the groove , you will soon figure out whats the story .
I must have made 10 to 20 trips with the guys that taught me whilst they were catching I did not get anything , and one day BOOM . since then I have taken Kob on lures on in Struis and in Falsbay [ most people think the Kob don't eat lures in CPT , don't ask me why ]

Thanks Len
I will keep looking.
Seems the best place for the Kob now is at Sundays. But as I have never fished that surf line, I don't even know where to drive to, or if it will be worthwhile. I will be trying somewhere again on Sunday.

The wind directions is not very nice. Normally any wind with north in it is bad. South uselly makes the water very clean. With alot of west in the wind I will hit the surf at van Stadens. Walk in the Gamtoos direction. 4 to 5 kilometers in that direction use to be a lekker bank not to far out. Nice spot for low tide. Lots of spots befor you get to this spot that is always wurth a try. To get to sundays. Turn in at the petrol garage at Colchester. Drive around it and follow the road till you get at a boom. Think it is R60 per vehicle for a day. After you have entered the gate just carry on straight till you reach a dead end. Its about 3km. You will be close to the mouth. Over the dunes and of to the left. Don't waste you time there if the wind is not east. The second day east thing normally starts to happen. You can also cross the river with a rowboat and fish the other side of the mouth. This is called vanneriets.

Hahahahaha ! I like this post of you Lenny ! :happ:
I'm a "artificial lure" angler for 20 years now,but every day I learn something new. I must go and have look in my old
"Stywe Lyne". Craig Thomassen wrote some articles about "artificial lure" angling some 15 to 18 years ago in the
Stywe Lyne. 15 years ago every one started to talk about the Alcock's brothers !

Bru , I still have those stywe Lyne . Lol
