Fish of the month - definitely the year and probably the last couple of years, has to go to a Tuna of 17.6 kgs caught by Louis Allison off the beach at the Sandspit, Port Shepstone on the new Assassin Amia with microwave guides.

What an awesome fish to catch from the shore. I wonder if Louis realises the real significance of a catch like this. This is not just a once in a lifetime thing, it’s hundreds of lifetimes that it takes for this sort of achievement, but being the angler he is, I think in his heart he knows it.

Wow, what an achievement!! :resp:

(clap) Awesome achievement!
What reel did he use?

Nice fish from anywhere, from the beach ......, awesome !!! The rod doesn't look too bad either.

Think it was a Stradic 5000.
-
Very nice fish and quite an achievement. I think this is going to be an exciting new facet of angling here, especially at spots where we can find deeper water closer to shore.
I am still fascinated with that stretch of beach at Virginia (Dbn) that gets deep so quickly, and think it holds potential for exciting fishing.
Any of the Durban guys perhaps have charts that show the depth of the water from the beach towards sea, exactly about behind the airport?
@Barry, that rod & reel system seems ideal for this new fishing discipline you all are promoting, fishing is getting worse than golf, now we'll all have to go out and get one if we want to catch fish like that.

My son lost a Garrick from the beach at Umgeni yesterday afternoon on a couta green glow .
-
That's an epic catch from the shore I have the light amia and I love it. I can't wait to use it on the island in my spare time.
-
What a fish!!!!!!! :shk :happ: :happ: (clap) :resp:

Where is the "like"button ???? wow that is a nice fish indeed.

Interesting to note that this is the third tuna I have seen taken from the shore in that area this year. I've never really heard of that before (outside the sard run) so I wonder if its that equipment improves so we are reaching these fish or if they are moving closer to shore for some reason (food sources, climate change etc.) Or just good old fashion luck :dunno:
-
wow great fish,
I wonder if anyone knows what braid he used and whether the fish took more than 300m, reason I ask is my 5000 reels are on the most part spooled with 300m without backing (I have 17lb Gosen and 10lb Nano and I could put some backing but kinda thought it would never be needed, when I see pics like this I start to wonder, Hope maybe - ha ha)
I see that looks like a Rapala which I doubt he casted too far with, there was a Couta caught off the north coast a few weeks back also with a Rapala / stickbait - amazing to see how close these fish come in (I'm assuming less than 75m from the rocks?)
Great fish once again

i know from spearfishing that these yft's often follow the dolfins on the backline to scavenge on the leftovers that they take one bite of.i shot one of 41kg years ago inthe bay at hibberdene.needless to say i had to swim to shore to higher ground to spot my float where i eventually found it at umfsazana near the shark nets.good fish.

HP two years ago off Scottburgh I was following some bird activity and came across a shoul of about a 1000 tuna all 6 to 8 kg just behind the backline and the water looked like it was boiling.... :shk is all I can say! Tell you what you could easy cast and land one they where so close to the shore.

Awesome 1st post :welc: and great catch
Were you seeing the fish busting or just blind casting?
-
I didn't catch the fish. From what i understand they were chasing half-beaks. Initially he thought they were garrick being so close but after hookup it came to the surface and splashed a bit before taking off 300m out to sea.
-
well done awesom catch :cgrts:
-
Wow awesome Vid! Some outstanding skills to land that gas bottle! (clap)
Thanks for posting TomSauce. Any idea of what terminal setup he was using - braid, leader length and knots?

Lucky guy, looks like the YFT got hooked on its pelvic fin.
In fishing you make your own luck.
Well done on a great catch.

Nope... hooked square in the mouth.

idiot... hooked square in the mouth.
That's a bit loose for a 3rd or 4th post. I must admit I also thought it looked hooked below the mouth near its throat latc, unless it had 2 hooks and the 1 in mouth and 1 there. Its not taking anything away from a very special fish, that will take a lot of beating. Having caught a 25kg yellowfin hooked in the tip of its pectoral fin, I don't think not being hooked in the mouth would have made the fight any easier.
-
Fair Enough... I may be wrong about the hook setting. But it wasn't the anal fin. The fish wasn't jigged. But there is a good reason comments were disabled from the youtube vid. Every extraordinary fish is questioned but i think all areas were covered here.
-
It's quite clear from the pics posted in #1 that the fish was hooked in the mouth...?

Not sure I get the point being discussed here?! Who cares where the fish was hooked? Is there any law stating that fish must be hooked in the mouth?!
Fish was chasing halfbeaks - angler casts lure - fish is hooked - fish fights - fish is landed!!!!!! End of story!
-
I also don't think it matters where the fish was hooked, good fight and good fish. It was targeted with a lure so nobody can suggest it was "jigged".
But now since my curiosity has been aroused, at the point where the fish is being hauled out the water and onto the beach, look from 2.57 minutes in the video, it does indeed seem the hook is set somewhere near the pectoral fins, while in the photo's where the angler poses with the catch the lure clearly and distinctly dangles from the fish's mouth.
It would be strange if the hook-set was removed from its original position and placed in the fish's mouth "for better photo appeal".

I saw that as well - surely moved for photo appeal?

Great fish, what an achievement from the beach! It does indeed look as though the fish was hooked below the chin and in the pelvic fin. It obviously had a go at the lure, missed and was hooked where it was hooked. If you look at the line rub marks on the side of the body, it shows at what angle the line went and where the lure was. None of this takes away from the catch at all, not in any way. In fact, if anything, it makes it even more of a spectacular catch on the tackle used. It is far harder to bring in a fish that is not hooked in the mouth, due to the extra drag of pulling it at an angle. I have heard of two YFT being landed from the shore this year on KZN South coast with live bait. This one is an amazing catch, having been made on artificial lure. Very well done to the angler, that is unquestionably a catch of a lifetime!

No offence was intended Tomato Sauce. I was congratulating the angler on landing the fish hooked in its pelvic fin, having missed the lure. I did not make any reference to jigging or the anal fin as you claim. For information purposes, the pelvic fin on a tuna is just below the throat latch.
Lady luck has been kind to all anglers at some time or another. I have landed fish clinging to bait cotton, and hooked in the chin, fins, wrapped around line etc. I was very grateful on each occasion.
In no way does the way it was hooked detract from the magnificence of the catch.
My sincere apologies if I inadvertently caused offence to anyone.

Clive, you mean this pic ... ? The one where you can see where it was hooked?
Have to agree with everyone else though ... regardless of where it was or wasn't hooked ... it's still an AWESOME catch ... (clap)
-
Exaccary Jakes, that one, yet when the angler poses with the fish it has the hook neatly embedded in its mouth.
Strange that someone would want to make an issue of something like this. I'd start jumping up and down with joy and the fire would have been started already.
Again, congratulations to the angler - this only in my wildest dreams.
-
Guys, the simple explanation is:
Angler caught the fish, removed the lure, hugged and kissed the fish (I would have) and then rehooked the lure, to take the photos.
The reason is to have his entire setup that he used to catch it in the photo. The thought as to where it was hooked probably never even occurred to him.
-
Hi Reef thanks for sharing !
Thats a amazing catch and definitely the year and probably the last couple of years ... :yft:
-
:envy and a thousand :cgrts: - that is an amazing catch and Louis fought that fish with finesse, control and patience - he deserves every acolade! I also picked up the pec fin hook-up but it really doesn't matter - if anything, it would have made the fight all that harder - that fish had his name written all over it.
Well done!

That area by Virginia does not drop off to deep water, you have a steep shore and then the bottom very slowly goes off deeper and for a several Km,s its just flat slowly going deeper, even at 7Km out its only 40m deep. the area is mostly sand and gravel with a few rocky outcrops
-
Thats an awesome catch. Well done Louis. :udman:
-
WOW! Congrats! Awesome fish! :happ:
how far was the cast? that lure doesn't look like it would get far out?
-
There's a two page story on this in the latest rock, surf and deep!
Still amazed by this catch... I reckon spinning tackle sales have just gone up!
