Wow awesome stuff trevelmember! Do you have some pics?
Where are the YFT right now past the canyon ? are they surfacing or hanging around the trawler/longliners?
This is soooooo exciting after the slow end to the season in May!
Any chance one of you Capies can start up a "Cape Offshore - Whatsup" thread like the KZN one, and maybe keep it going? Would be awesome to keep up to date with the Cape offshore happenings... :1t:fully , sure as things get cooking down here , 7/10 will keep us in the loop i know I will with my limited info .
offshore league this weekend, should be interesting, sunday looks good. E/SE has been pumping. be interesting to see the temp charts now.
Anyone going out this weekend
7/10 Thanks for the interesting water temperature charts. What water temp do the Yellowfin hold in?
will be out Sun and Mon. Last weeks temp was 17-18. Saw the deck boats offload the other day - some big fish. Saw 5 over 100.

@7/10 - I have heard about the Alphard banks but don't know any facts about it. I have a general idea where it is and I know it is quite a mission to get there because of the weather etc. Would you mind telling us a bit more about the place? No prob, Alphard banks are 42nm from Struisbaai, 38nm from Infanta(witsands) and 40NM from Still bay... position 35deg 2" 369' S and 20deg 51" 019' E (shallowest point) covering an area of about 25square miles..
and you have to be the first boat there if you can help it.Why is this?

If there a lot of boats there, the fish tend to sound on the shallow pinnacle then you have to go looking for the elsewhere and burn fuel!!Thanks 7/10. I can't wait to get out on the water.
YFT off Cape point at the 32 & 10 - plenty fish feeding on the surface of 25 - 60kg... sounds like the big shoals are here!
7/10
Not in full strength yet.
Saturday was OK, quite a few smaller fish on top, yesterday was a bit bleak. Ones and twos only. There is so much bait out there at the moment - fish are stuffed. Smaller class have arrived.
We picked up some longies, blues, mako and plenty fresh hake.
Seems like better fish on the inside, outside was a bit greenish.

I spoke to Two commercials (Trail and Mark) who have both seen some long nosed black ladies on the Agulhas banks... this is exciting stuff! No one targeting them as yet so no hook ups but nice to know they there!!
Monday and Tuesday looking good!
Tight lines sir
7/10 - it is almost time for the big day. Do you have an outlook on the weather for next week or is it too early to start checking it out? The sleepless nights are driving me crazy. :hehe: :rck"

General:
They lay in about 85-90m of water and come up to 12m from the surface at the shollowest, which breaks in heavy swells. The structure is amazing and in some place comes up from 85m to 20m in the distance of 30m (shear walls). I will post a pic of the finder this Dec. due to the depth it comes up to, it forms a split in the shipping lanes (seperation zone) and thus you dont have to worry about some arb ship trying to mow you over whilst you fighting your prize fish! This happens in the canyon and on the 12 mile!
Ecology:
There are plenty of Yellowtail and often big shoals of geelbek at the right time of the year. I have also seen big trutles (leatherbacks), sun fish (Mola Mola) and caught dorado, marlin (Dec - Feb) and stunning bottoms. We both fish and spear the spot and under the water there are huge shoals of bait and rays.... Between the Alphard and the 45 (12miles appart) is and awesome place to pull for stripeys and for years the record stripey came from there (Trail Whittun). Plenty of YFT and other pelagics to be had and forms part of the Agulhas banks. There is even a bit of kelp on the top of the pinnacles of which there are 12 main ones.
If you can get a bait through the silvers you can catch nice santer and Red steenbrass, the 45 has produced plenty over 50kgs... Nowdays we dont target them much or just release them but still great to know they still about....
When:
November to March is the time, from struis we normally go in no wind - 2 hour boat ride or on a freshening SE. Then you run back with the wind on you heels. It is best fished in Feb as the weather is at it's best, but if the water is warm I have yet been there and failed to get at least some tail.... but be prepared to burn some gas, a normal day there is about 110NM round trip and you have to be the first boat there if you can help it. Sun up (about 5am) = Fish on (verticle jigs, rapalas, spinners etc the yellowtail are not fussy) if your tide timing right about 8-9am is a good time to start pulling plastic for the Stripeys. I like the banks to the south for this heading towards the 45's.
I used to be 6'6", but I love the place so much I am only 5'9"... 4hours of hauling back and forth is a LONG day but really worth it.

The excitement is in the air.
As in this week we will go out with 7/10 to go and caught :billf: :yft: .
Just hope the weather hold out as at the moment the SE is pumping.

 ... fraid nothing from my side!!! siting at work in the DRC. Will ask my mates what going on and try get back to you.....
47 knots of SE on a 5m swell. No fishing since last weekend - and not much gap in the weather forecast til next Friday.
Time to rig up for the decent size fish which will surely be here after this wind.
Maximus 26,only thing I got to report is that I am stuck in Namakwa land and looks like a west coast bokkom for not getting on the boat or close to the sea for some fishing.
Hi Lenny....
Not much am still away with work, After moving our boat from Struis, Gav went out in to the deep on wed? and thurs? got some small YFT in the west (20kg) and yellowtail under some weed with a few Longies mixed in but no fireworks, cannot tell you water temp as our sensor was on the blink. Heard about yellowtail at Dassen and mate of mine (Gary) bagged a few of 3-6kgs, I have photies and will try post them.
I Think it was on Monday, I spoke to Paul on "Salti" and he was on the 12mile banks (Struis) and was busy catching nice size tail but I see the water temp has dropped to about 18deg.. winter is coming!
I will be off to ascension on Wed and hope to have a report from there by late next week. Colin (skipper on the Island) tells me he has had 15 to 25 big YFT per day and has had 880lbs and 900lbs Blue already this season.
Will see what news I can get but the big YFT should be around soon (I hope)... Tight lines

What's been happening in Struis? Am I missing out on anything?I was there last weekend but the weather was not good. I saw some red fish and Yellowtail off loaded from the boats. One guy had a very good sized red stump.
Herman I guess the red stump is what we call a Miss Lucy? Such a beautiful fish!Yes, and good tasting too. :hehe:
My Post this morn seem to have dissapeared .
YELLOWTAIL in good numbers the past couple of days / 10 to 20 bins a boat .
Sizewize a mixed bag , but some good fish inbetween .
A welcome relief for the local Skippers after a hard winter .

Hi Lenny,
Thanks for the info once "again" ... Your previous post is just under another thread ...
Hopefully it would be a promising upcoming summer season ...
Skipper
:spinwheel:
Sorry , If I was not feeling so siff , Would have had another bit of info , but I reckon more boats were out today , maybe even tonight , my dad told me theres a Deckboat/ Tjokka boat in the bay , will have more info n Friday .
Lenny did you manage to get some yellow tail?
Sea is full of life.Grew up in Simontown and NW always seemed to aid the fishing, warming water up,culminating in Tail arriving.Caught plenty from the old Simonstown Bullnose with full live Mackie on.GREAT FUNNNN!
Plenty of tail and katonkel at the Point and yellowfin and skippies 5 miles off. NW is not pleasant but sure brings the fish onto the bite.
Had a ball on light tackle yesterday.
Cape going Crazy!!! :shk
Rainbow runner caught in False bay at Rooi Kranz. water 20 deg,
24 degrees 1mile off Scarborough and one commercial had 19 marlin Strikes. My boat went to the deep and got 7 yellows the stopped fishing and the guys jumped into the water to look at the Tuna!!
and I am at work!!! :-( :-( :-( :-(
Dont worry MAn , I AM SURE the Bills will be wild , maybe not on 12 mile but FOR SURE on the Alphards .
Got word of a 123 kg YEllowfin / guys out of Houtbay , any word from your side about that 7/10 about it .
Lenny, That is Epic.... Well done and glad you had a good day. The boat Rusvic is Trail Whutton and he is an old hand at the marlin (first to catch them at struis and start the craze!!)
Nice Dorado..hope you gonna eat that one!!
:corrct:
Trail , Were on Vlakbank , not on a Marlin mission . the Dorrie was gobbled up CAJUN style .
TM it is not solid to ID tuna on the gill rake as there are 18 to 22 gill rakers on the first gill arch of a Bigeye Tuna. There will be 24 to 28 gill rakers on a Bluefin Tuna, and 27 to 33 gill rakers on a Yellowfin and Slenders and SBFT fit in between. Where external examination cannot be 100% the leading authourities use internal organ inspection of which the liver is the easiest, a lot of cape fishermen make assumptions and I have had this plenty on my boat, but the only solid way of ID on Tuna is with the liver and other internal organs. I often have a marine biologist on my boat and he often proves me wrong on my first assumptions with ID, but the depth you were fishing at - unlikely to be a YFT. That is an awesome fish, what I am interested in is have you caught any Broadbill yet? we have tried and only had one at the boat! Thanks for the very interesting information. :Like:
The credit for this is to Dennis Albert - I hope he does not mind!
"Description: The body of the bigeye tuna is cigar-shaped (tapered at both ends). The head is pointed and the eye is relatively large. The color is dark metallic brownish blue to dark yellow on the back becoming gray or whitish below. There often is a bluish stripe on the side. In most individuals, the length of the pectoral fins should enable one to identify the species properly. Both bigeye and yellowfin tuna look similar, but bigeye tuna have pectoral fins which extend well past their anal fin, while yellowfin tuna have much shorter pectoral fins. Tuna which cannot be distinguished by external characteristics can be positively identified by liver characteristics. Bigeye tuna livers are striated (covered with blood vessels) along the trailing edges, while yellowfin tuna livers are smooth. Small bigeye tuna also may be distinguished from albacore by the characteristics of the liver. The liver is heavily striated in the albacore while the bigeye tuna liver is only striated along the trailing edges.

It looks like the warm water is still way off.SAfish I saw on KADA's website that guys have caught YFT off Knysna, any idea if this is a regular occurance or is it only when the warm water pushes in close enough offshore?
It happens every now and then, but not every year. I have spoken to an old guy the other day about this. He told that a couple of years ago the YFT were close to the shore and the guys would launch their boats after work to go and catch a couple. It is a rare occurrence but it does happen. I mean, a guy caught a Dorado in the lagoon last summer so anything is possible. :hehe: :hnthnt:Ok cool, hopefully it happens this December!! :hnthnt: Would love to check out the offshore SST charts for that day the guy caught that Dorado :shk the warm water must've been damn close in! Actually does anyone know where I can get hold of old SST charts for Dec 2013?
Anyone have any recommendations for fishing off the rocks at Cape Point? looking to go on tuesday! any help would be appreciated! :tite
They are there, just in small numbers. A mate lost a big fish a couple of weeks ago. Backlines.
