Off to find the big one........
« on: May 23, 2012, 06:44:37 PM »
Time for a midweek break. Hoping to get the elusive 30lb plus fooshie tomorrow.

Beautiful 45lb mirror was caught last week on the same spot we are fishing tomorrow.

Let's hope I have something to report on Friday.

 :tite to me!

There’s more to life than fishing – a significant small bit that I haven’t figured out yet….

The big  :carp: eluded me once again, but hey, fishing on a weekday with my dad makes up for the lack of action.

I have forgotten what winter fishing feels like, couldn't use my hands during the first hour it was so cold.

Baits were in by 7am and the waiting game began. Luckily we had some good company in our neighbour. It was a gentleman who owns a tackle shop and lodge near Bloemhof dam who knows his stuff as far as specimen angling goes so it was good to chat to him and listen to his stories.

At about 12 we had a fast and furious run and I thought this is it. the little fella put up a good fight but unfortunately it wasn't the monster we were after. Unfortunately that was the only run for the day, better than nothing i suppose.

My dad and his friends are fishing today and tomorrow as well, wish I could stay for an extra day but I need to work now and then as well.

Watch this space, the 40 pounder is on its way!

The dam we fished runs shallow quite far out, then you get a stretch of grass that basically runs half the length of the dam which is followed by a very steep (or gradual depending where you fish) drop off  up to about 50 feet in places. There are deeper holes in the dam but this is the area we fished.

We chose to fish a distance of between 200 and 220 metres. There is a lot of grass on the bottom of the dam so all rigs had pop ups to keep the bait off the bottom and out of the grass and mud.

One of our neighbours actually dropped a few of his baits right in the stretch of thick grass that I mentioned and caught a very nice 8kg mirror early morning before we arrived.

We had a whole variety of presentations in the water. We had rigs out with tigernuts, boilies, those new age plastic boilie things, kaboe mielies and also the new pop up tigernuts (costs R50 for a packet of 6/7  :shk)

The run came on two tigernuts on a hair rig with a pop up in between the tigernuts.

later the day i was busy playing on my phone when there was a decent run on one of the rods, I almost threw my phone across the dam out of excitement. Turned out there was a little boy who was playing with a rod who cast his weight over our lines, quite an anti climax when I realised what happened.
