All Stumpnose are part of the Sparidae Family of Seabreams.
The 4 above are all Rhabdosargus genus...
Red Stump is distinctive in it's own Genus Chrysoblephus. Don't think you can really misidentify it!

Cape Stumpnose
South Africa's Cape Stumpnose fish is an amazing looking specimen.
Rhabdosrgus holubi
is it's scientific name and it gets it's common name from the place it was discovered and the shape of it's nose, very stout. This is personally one of my favourite South African saltwater fish species and it is a joy to look at and to catch (On light tackle).
This species of Stumpnose fish is a deep bodied and oval shaped, with a yellow line running down the middle of it's silver-coloured body. This is the smallest species of Stumpnose that occurs in the offshore coastal waters of South Africa and it relies on estuaries too. It is endemic to the Southern African seas and ocean and it can reach a length of about 50 cm. The South African angling record for this species is just over 2 kilograms.
Cape
Stumpnose
are a very good eating fish and they are too small to be exploited by commercial fisherman. The future is bright as long as we can keep our estuaries in good condition. The fry and juvenile Cape Stumpnose depend heavily on these saltwater and freshwater estuaries for survival

While fishing in Moz, we took a walk to the beach to check out the launch and came across a fisherman fighting a fish! When he landed it, it was the biggest Stumpie I had ever seen. Must have been closer to 3kg! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera but I wish I had! If the record is 2k, he would have smashed it!

Bennie... the Stumpnose in KZN and Moz are probably the Natal Stumpnose... record 7.7kg!
Here's a 5kg one caught on light tackle in Mapelane...

Reefs,
As a matter of fact we get 3 species of stumpnose in Moz: the big eye, the white and the Natal stumpnose...
I would say the bigeye and Natal are the most common...
