MOZAMBIQUE: EN1 ROAD WASHED AWAY!!!!
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:19:30 PM »
To those traveling north of Maputo in the next few weeks:

At "3 de Fevereiro" just past Palmeira (about 120 km north of Maputo), the EN1 has been washed away! There's a 20 m gap and the water depth was 8 m, yesterday!  :shk

No road connection between north and south!

So please postpone you travel plans, as no dates have been put forward to the re-opening of the road!

Thanks John F! My boy and friend still adamant to go up and take a chance that the authorities have made a plan with an army bridge - after seeing your photo I have my doubts  :-( .  It's a long way to go and just have to turn around.

That was my first thought Krissi... but even if they do it, it will take at least a month... they will need to put a bid out, etc... please tell them to be patient and wait... things are chaotic... already 4 people have died in the area...

The Moamba-Chibuto-Chokwe road is also blocked... so no alternative! The lower Limpopo is overflowing and there are large areas flooded!

The gap is now 60 m wide! No bridges are being contemplated. The National Roads Agency is deploying rocks trying to close the gap!

Caraca! So no Chidenguele for me then...
Some lodges also received minor damage to their structures.
Thanks for keeping in the loop.

Happy days!

Thanks John - I will tell them they have to postpone the trip! Gonna be some bleak boys, but there is nothing they can do against the forces of nature. Thanks so much for the updates  .

Ai ai ai thats hectic  :-( unfortunately most of the EN1 goes over many rivers using very low bridges and are all in danger when these cyclone rains pull through.

Keep safe peeps! :mxmb:

The edge of Cyclone Funso may also be making an appearance around Inhasorro and Vilanculos this afternoon (Bouyweather seems to be indicating this - wind predicted to peak at around 60kts by late Thursday / early Friday). Cyclones can also drop huge amounts of water..... and if this happens in the low lying areas, more damage is possible...... let's hope this doesn't happen!

Cheers - RB
