Yesterday we delivered a young up and coming provincial anglers PB and record Yellowfin. Today we gave a young angler a Tuna slam of 3 species on his first day at sea and hopefully planted the seed that will send him on a lifetime fishing journey and cultivate a love for the ocean. He also released two young tuna to fight another day on his first deep sea outing with his dad... simply awesome and a glimmer of hope for the future!!

Fish very patchy think its still to early but hoping to run into a good shoal and see what gives. Very good class and sure to get bigger on the bait, just need an opportunity to prove it! Strike under frigate birds so no birds no strike!

Well it certainly doesnt get any better! After 2 awesome days fishing posting a new benchmark for Yellowfin we took it even further and landed the biggest marlin ever to come out of the Richards Bay waters, a magnifacent fish of 363 kgs or 800lbs in old school terms. Reel Magic Charters has had a simply awesome week and there is no doubt who is doing the business here!!

Well done on a big fish. Pity she was not/could not be released.

Love to hear a more detailed report including conditions, tactics etc. Not everyday we get a 800 pounder in SA so we want to hear all about it please :-)

Its taken a while to get to the details but we had a good evening last night and the head has a slight knock :cnfzd this morning.

Wow what a great day we had! Started off trolling pretty shallow and worked out to the 1000 meter line to search for the Yellowfin with reports of bird life in the deep. Unfortunately my charters had turned down the opportunity to enter the Bonanza. All said we may have done things differently and missed this fish had we entered.,
It was 0840am and we had just reached the 1400m line. I had marked some good bait on the 1200 line so we turned back to work the area when I saw a big :billf: fish on the echo at 20 meters, and showed Divan the mark. As he turned too look back the fish had its first go at the short right rigger and missed completely. We were now all alerted and craning to see the fish as she returned three more times connecting on the 4th attempt. I was already shouting BIG  :billf: Fish when she took ,as she had a massive dorsal and was carving up the water behind the lure. She ate and took line slowly at first and then hit the after burners in one of the most blistering  :sreel: runs we have ever seen. The first jump and explosion on the water had me in shock. :shk The last time I had seen a fish displace that much water was the 1000 lb fish we released in St Helena last year. She absolutely destroyed the dacron backing even though I had Reel Magic in full reverse trying to stop us from being spooled. Having a platform on the transom is no advantage and the water was dammed up above the covering boards as the swim platform dug in like an x-rap and slowed us down. I was about to hit the panic button and try to spin the boat to chase going forward but I knew we wouldn't complete the turn before the spool emptied. :fshn:
Another 10 seconds and it would have been over as there was less than 100 meters left on the spool. Fortunately she stalled and gave us a gap.
There was more than 1000 meters of line in the water so we babied her until we had a quarter of the spool back before going up a fraction on the drag and worked her back to the boat. :fshn: Divan had kindly offered to help me as deckie for the day and he did an awesome job on the toughest fish we have leadered. (clap) She was on and off the the leader for over 40 long minutes and the tension was incredible as the fish swam in full view some 5-8 meters down but would not budge. I kept telling Divan she was a bomb and he kept telling me he had never felt that kind of weight on a leader..it was awesome! The Go Pro footage we got from the fly bridge and on the angler is spectacular and the fight lasted 2 hours. We landed her at 1040am and our day was done! Slow troll home with beers in hand. :frid Reel Magic at its best! :vio

I know some will question us loading the fish but remember we have released 20 fish this season with 2 doa tailwraps and only one other kill. I also had mixed  feelings about it but this was an exceptional fish and a record for the area, so I took the decision to use the gaff. We donated the meat to a local community charity in Richards Bay which cares for orphans and families, via  Dave Savides of The Observer.
And the rest as they say :clwn is history!

WELL DONE. AWESOME AWESOME.

Congrats to all involved and especially to the captain for managing this fish after such a blistering first run.

PS: No pain on not releasing, it's every bodies own call. I would most probably have gaffed that fish too.

WEll done again...you guys sure mean business

Yesterday we had an interesting day fishing in 25-30 knots of NE, landing another nice Yellowfin of 48 kg amongst the most Yellowfin I have ever seen in this area. The harder the wind blew the more fish started to break the surface..fish everywhere. Hooked another Blue and lost it just short of the leader when the hooks pulled. Eventually had to put on the biggest lures and throw back the pesky 10-20 kg class yellowfin that where eating even the biggest lures..awesome fishing in anyones books!! :fshn:
Looks like the Yellowfin are arrriving in mass and hopefully the big girls will be on the outside. A pity about the conditions as it was impossible to get out there yesterday even on the big boat!
