Mazeppa Accomodation - 5 Aug till 12 Aug 2012?
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:56:30 PM »
Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of changing my annual July/August family fishing trip that I do to Port Edward/South Coast to rather go to Mazeppa Bay. I have 3 questions and would appreciate your assistance:

1.) What will the fishing be like that time of year at Mazeppa? I want to mainly target larger eds such as Garrick, Cob and whatever else is around.                    If the eds aren't around I'll change tactics to in-eds but my main focus will be on eds.
2.) And 2ndly, can anyone recommend decent accommodation in Mazeppa Bay other than the hotel itself? The hotel charges almost R12k for a 7 night               stay for the 4 of us but it does include 3 meals a day so it's not all bad. I do however want to have a look at some self catering alternatives if                       there are such options available.
3.) And then lastly, what are the road conditions like to get to Mazeppa? Is it a comfortable drive with a 4x2 or would one need a 4x4 to get there.                   The wife has already said that she's not in the mood for a serious 4x4 trip to get to some scruffy looking dump in the middle of nowhere. What                     route would one take from Pretoria/Jhb to get to Mazeppa and what would to approximate traveling time be?

Regards
Jakes

Jakes the road is pretty good and one of the best transkei routes around. The dirt from Butterworth to the hotel is a little potholed but is easy in a bakkie and passable in even a sedan.

I will give my mate a call and ask where they stayed in when doing self catering.

Sorry I can't advise on the eds front I've never really targeted them much so I don't know what's around when.

Btw Mazeppa is a pilgrimage EVERY angler MUST do at some stage!

hi

have a look in the tight lines mag. theres always an ad at the back of the book on a self catering place at mazeppa.
also contact own richter as im sure he has a cottage there that he lets out.

when you reach, give andrew a call . 0786672727.
he is a local guy there and is probably the best person to ask for advice on the edible angling at mazeppa.

ask him to take u to shelly beach. pump some cracker and you will get a variety of stuff there.

always have a plugging rod when u on the island. the garrick normally pitch up a few times a day. u wil know when they are there...trust me.

also try throwing big softbaits (artificials) off the island. there are 10kg kob sitting 20m off the island. we have seeing them.

good luck

Tks guys, pls keep the suggestions coming. I'm also still doing some more research myself and will posy the final results/decision shortly.

On another note, what's the recommended route to take to get there from GP?
