Boat first aid kit
« on: July 25, 2010, 03:36:51 PM »
  •     I carry a first aid  kit on my boat at all times, but never  really seen a "standard" list   of stuff that one should have aboard. Can we all start adding up to  compile a comprehensive list of items?

    This is what I've got:

    Medicine
Pain killer [Becenol NC (strong!),  Paracetamol]
    Imodium
    Antimalarial (Artesunate)
    Antiseptic solution (Savlon)
    Eye drops (Safyr Bleu)
Antiseptic cream [Bactroban - a MUST  for marine  (arrgghh, everyday!) use!!]
    Anticeptic cream (Cetrinide)
    Anticeptic solution (Cetrinide)
    Oral rehidratation salts
    Swimers ear solution

    Consumables
    Adhesive bandages (Band aid)
    Plaster roll
    Wound pad
    Topical hidrogel dressing (Kooldown)
    First aid dressing
    Triangular bandage
    Cotton balls
    Elastic bandage
    Sterile gauze

    Equipment
    Small scissor
    Collapsible drinking glass
    CPR   mouth-to-mouth piece
    Exam gloves
    Plastic tweezers
    First aid manual

SUPER GLUE!
The best thing to close up line cuts or minor-moderate lacerations. Cyanoacrylate glue is now being used in modern day theatres as an essential adjunct to wound closure.
Still the best thing to stop a painful line cut.

SEASICK TABS
Stugeron 25mg; Cinnarizine

Spare pair of sunglasses
Should your pair go overboard, there is not much worse a feeling than arc-eye.

Factor 50 Sunblock/Blockout - can never have enough sunblock onboard.

An eye patch is always handy.

Anti-Histamine tablets and cream - for Marine animal poisoning- ie: urchins, Dorsal spines

Good one, Tony. Just be careful not to stick more than the cut.  :hehe:

Hahaha... ya.

Using Superglue, hold the wound closed with light pressure on either side, then get someone to liberally apply the glue, carefully covering the entire breach. Sets in a few seconds by drying, then you're raring to go.

I am never without Superglue in my Tackle box.

Please please please include a pair of HEAVY WEIGHT side cutters that are STERILE for hook removals.Recently saw a hook removal being performed with un-steralised , under-powered side cutters and the side effects , whilst being impressive :rotfl , were not pretty.

Maybe I'm over the top but an essential part of my kit is a dedicated mini bolt cutter (up to 4mm dia.), clean and vacuum sealed..... Cost was R55 two years ago.

Unless you are Piet Joubert a 14/0 through the ear does not look cool.
A set of bolt cutters is a must on the boat. Those Gorillas and VMC tuna hooks don't cut with sidies, only a bolt cutter, well... so we've learned.

Super glue burns like hell! And the chemicals aren't safe for your body, definitely not your blood stream!
Just get some liquid band-aid, it's like super glue, but without the dangerous chemicals, that's more likely what atheletes use.
