Another knot you can use that's also very strong is the Spyker knot or you can also do a fig 8 to Uni knot but I second Homie that re-spooling will always be the best option.
Back to back fig 8 should be fine. As you say, you probably never going to get to the join, But, if you do, thats when the trouble starts ! Having a lower breaking strain line as backing is not good ! no matter the knot you use, the weakest point is going to be the backing line, and when that goes, so does all your topshot !
If you have to join nylon, the best knot to use is, as Homie says, the double fig 8.... small, very strong. No need for Bimini's. It will always be a weak spot in your setup, but if you have to, thats the way to go.
